Yes. If you don't stand up to death threats, I'll kill you.

One Feminist Critic's Battle With Gaming's Darker Side

NPR Interview with Anita S wrote:
On why she thinks this is happening in the gaming community

In some ways there are some men who have gravitated toward gaming culture because they have been rejected by this larger, alpha male culture. The problem with that is that gaming allows them to fulfill that role — the alpha male role — the macho testosterone posturing you get in a lot of these big, AAA [big-budget] games. So they're actually kind of re-perpetuating that alpha male culture by attacking people that they perceive to be weaker than them. So they're going after women, they're going after ***** folks, they're going after trans folks, and especially anyone who speaks up and is critical in any way about gaming.
Agree?

That guy isn't the leader of a "movement" that's trying to distance itself from its misogynistic origins.

He's a Kotaku writer with a twitter account.

I wouldn't want either as the figurehead of any movement I was supporting.

*shrug* As good an explanation as any. Then again you don't have regular, non-virtual alpha males throwing bricks at random women so you may be wrong about the whole thing.

Sounds more like she's making a "little penis" claim. Gamers aren't able to make it in Real Manly World so they go to Gamer-Man World and pick on girls.

Where do we rank death threats made by pissy developers against owners of digital distribution companies?

That's a pretty mild one. Those dota and other f2p players on Steam facebook get really aggressive when their precious steam no longer works. And all in broken English. Though, I can't tell if it's because they don't speak English or if it's because they are just an average internet user posting on the interwebs.

Sure, but DOTA players aren't publishing games on Steam. Of course, this guy isn't any longer either.

I guess I don't know who Mike Murderbeck is... being a developer on Steam isn't very hard these days, so I didn't really hold that detail in any high regard.

Biddle's response to what happened to him over the weekend is pretty amusing.

A guy who joked about bullying got bullied by gamergaters: WHO'D A 'THUNK IT!?!

Article wrote:
These people have nothing in common except their prior irrelevance, obscurity, and a dogged hatred of anything resembling progressive values. But to even call the clown kings of Gamergate "conservatives" is to give them more credit than they're due; this isn't political, it's personal and deeply cynical.

Atop a blob of angry, naive, and alienated youths is this handful of self-promoters who recognize an opportunity to self-promote. The kids of Gamergate think they've found heroes and allies, a group of adults who will finally include and respect them. But they're being made fools of all over again.

If you think Gjoni is a figurehead, you're sadly mistaken. We really don't have one. We do have a few organizers, maybe, but no figurehead. An off the rails Kotaku writer is emblematic of everything we're arguing against: Ethically dubious games journalists.

What is 'your' group doing to address the ethically dubious game journalism?

edit - I think I need to go back to bed.

Getting advertisers to pull out from ethically dubious publications and doing what we can not to read them. At this point, I'm not sure what else we can do as consumers, really.

Gabe isn't a woman, so it's okay to make death threats against him.

Gjoni started it, by behaving like a man-child because he was dumped, & quit his job in order to run it with the other leaders, according to him & the article linked earlier. Kick him out of "gamergate" if you don't want him to be the figurehead. He only disracts people from the "real" issues anyway, so keeping him around only hurts the brand.

Poldaran wrote:

Bullying him for making a joke about bullying only makes gamergaters look like hypocrites. Hell, the guy who threatened to fight him for charity is a massive misogynistic douche - is it any wonder he became gamergate's newest idol of the moment?

Do that, but call it something else. Associating with misogynistic douches only hurts the cause.

Whoah, hey, back this up a minute. I was all for the no death threats stuff before I knew you could be turning a profit off this.

Nah, the alleged death threats from Wizardchan happened well before Gjolni and Quinn broke up.

How do you decide and/or define publications that are practicing unethical gaming journalism?

Anyone that refers to Depression Quest as a game is certainly worth questioning.
