Well, think about global warming from the point of view of someone who grew up taking Ayn Rand seriously, believing that the untrammeled pursuit of self-interest is always good and that government is always the problem, never the solution. Along come some scientists declaring that unrestricted pursuit of self-interest will destroy the world, and that government intervention is the only answer. It doesn’t matter how market-friendly you make the proposed intervention; this is a direct challenge to the libertarian worldview.
How did this happen, exactly? I mean... how did we get such a large number of people who "grew up taking Ayn Rand seriously" so to speak?
I'm looking at my son right now. He is two years old. I think about the way some folks are raised to be extremely violent and racist, or religious in some way or another. But what do teach your children to make them grow up and think "I'm a douche bag, and no one else matters in this world but me" --and at what point does that become "
I need sacrifice everything to ensure bigger, richer douche bags have the right to do as they please, at any cost-- because, you know, liberty."
I wouldn't believe it if I didn't personally know several people who believe this way, and are very vocal about it. All I hear about is how all the world's problems stem from the evil and oppressive US government and how free we'd all be if we could just put up with a little acid rain. It's not even about money. A factory explosion that kills everyone inside is the essence of freedom-- provided it could have been easily prevented by common sense regulation forced upon us by the great oppressor.
