I didn't even know they were still in the running.

They haven't been eliminated yet?

After 1 million shots on goal, US lands the wackiest one.

Edit: make that the wackiest two.

I was listening to an NPR thing about how the ball makers were ******** with the number of panels because there was no standard regulations. And it caused some strange aerodynamics when kicked straight, apparently some Japanese guy kicked a shot on goal and the ball suddenly shifted downward mid flight, making the goalie miss the block.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK.

Edit: Easily the most entertaining group stage in the last 30 years though, even if every other game is a 0-0 draw.

That goes to the Costa Rica group in my opinion, especially with an Italy vs Uruguay thriller waiting for us.

Although this shaped up to be quite the match in the end.

So... what happens in a tie? Sudden Death? Literal Death? Country with the highest GDP wins?

If I recall it's a shoot off, with one player and the goalie from each team taking turns. First to score wins.

With a tie in points goal difference decides, if that is equal the team with the most goals scored goes through amd if even that is equal they draw lots.

By most goals scored, you mean in all games leading up to that one?

And as for points tied, and goals tied, I'm to assume that is like when Brazil scored on itself. Point for Croatia, goal for Brazil? Or is that still a Croatia goal, and there are other points than goals?

(If it's not already evident, I know nothing of football/soccer).

If it's not already evident

Oh, don't worry, IT'S EVIDENT. If a knock out game is tied they go penalty kick shoot out. If a group stage game is tied it's a draw and each side is awarded 1 point. A win is worth 3 points, and losing 0. The two teams with the most points in each group at the end of the group stage move on to the knock out stage. The goal differential and all that applies to two teams being tied in points at the end of the group stage.

They're in groups of 4 with the best 2 going through to the first knockout round.

So for the group stage a win is 3 points, a draw is 1 point and a loss is 0. With each country playing each other country once it's not uncommon to see 2 or more teams end up woth the same amount of points.

When that happens they look at the goal difference, literally goals scored minus goals scored against them. USA is at +1 with 4 scored and 3 against, Portugal is at -4 because of their 4 - 0 defeat against Germany.

Should 2 teams end up with the same points andnthe same goal difference the most goals scored counts so 5 scored and 2 against beats 3 scored and 0 against.

If even that is equal lots are drawn at random (though this almost never happens).

Once we get to the elimination rounds it's just the one 90 minute game, if that ends in a draw a 15 minute extension is added and a second 15 minute extension if it's still a draw. After that it's 5 penalty kicks for each team, taking in turns where the most goals scored wins.

If after all that they're still equal teams alternate on taking penalties until one team scores and the other doesn't.

I think Tirith was asking about a the effect of a tie at the end of a game, not for progression purposes.

Tirith - it's like ice hockey, you can end the game in a tie. The others are talking about moving on after this round of play and who gets to progress in the event of a tie. Also, I defer to Aeth, Shaow, and Smash as my rules knowledge of futbal is rather weak.

I didn't understand the difference between points and goal, and did not realize the games were grouped like this.

I'd be happy with either the USA or Ghana going through with Germany (the Germany - Ghana game was excellent, if you missed it). This Portugal team is deeply dysfunctional and it'd probably be better for everyone if they went home and relaxed.

That seems to be the one on the radio, so it's a done deal. Smiley: thumbsup

Though seeing if Spain could lose to Australia would be very amusing as well. Icing on the cake for their world cup and such.

They're both televised in their entirity here so I can switch back and forth.

Edit: they're also both streamed live so theoretically I could watch both at the same time.
