Speaking of world cups, we should get a football thread going sooner or later. Preferably before England and the US get knocked out in the group stage.
Don't say I never did anything for you.

In addition to the above I'm going for Brazil to get knocked out in the semi-final round, triggering mass protests which will do nothing to help lower the price of bus tickets. Anyone else want to make a prediction?

US Women will probably get to the semi-finals. They tend to do well.

Do we still have a mens team?

Yes, kind of.

It seems they left popular players at home and are praying that Ronaldo is too injured to be a factor and that one particular witch doctor in Ghana is very bribe-able.

The US Men's team is actually fairly good now. That said, I don't think they have a chance in hell of beating Portugal or Germany. England have a chance if Italy flop which, to be fair, they do about half the time.

Group A - Brazil, Croatia
Group B - Spain, Chile
Group C - Colombia, Ivory Coast
Group D - Uruguay, Italy
Group E - France, Switzerland
Group F - Argentina, Nigeria
Group G - Germany, Portugal
Group H - Belgium, Algeria

US women with hockey are usually pretty bad, in part due to them not starting to play hockey before the age of ~14 rather than 5 or 6 for the top countries.

As for football, as I said in the other thread I think Brazil, Spain or Germany will win and I hope Belgium will do very well.

Mostly they just flop to get penalties, there's some damn good actors in the Italian team.

I'm rooting for some English player to snap Balotelli in half, give him something real to cry about.

Clearly rigged for Argentina to win this year. Any other outcome will be surprising.

The Netherlands might make it past group if they get lucky against chili but that likely pits them against Brazil so that'll be the end of the line then.

Yeah, they're fairly evenly matched teams, Chile's main edge is the Brazilian summer.

I'm hoping Belgium will be the surprise of the tournament or something but either Spain, Brazil or Germany will walk away with the trophy.

Yeah, I've heard a bit of buzz about Belgium, I'm looking forward to seeing them play. I like the German team, but I have a feeling it'll be a South American team that wins the cup.

Italy has the best actors, that's for sure. Brazil on the other hand like to launch themselves across the field clutching their knees every time someone sneezes near them.

Belgium has a better team than they've ever had before which doesn't really say much but I think they've got a good shot of making quarter or maybe even semi finals. Lots of very good players in that team.

I'm going to be IN Germany for a good chunk of the Cup so I am hoping that they do well so that the party continues for the duration of my trip.

I'll be pleased if the USA Men's team makes it to the semi-finals. I'm expecting the women's team to be in the final match. Is Hope Solo still going to be our goalie? She has the best sports name ever.

No women's world cup with football, that's just hockey. In football the women's teams are still shuffled to the back far away from the public eye.

And I'd be amazed if the US make it to the semi finals, I don't see them making it out of a group with Portugal and Germany and they'd be up against Belgium to make it to the quarter finals and Belgium has a very good team this year.

Southern Hospitality in the middle of German Football Hooligan Season sounds like the start of a B-Action movie.

Well that's a good start for Brazil...

Smiley: lol

Really, what are the odds of Brazil scoring on themselves to start the tournament? Someone on a joke bet just won a lot of money. Smiley: rolleyes

I too was excited by the early own goal, but then it turned out it was still Brazil and Croatia after all. Brazil scores 4 goals and wins 3-1.
