This little tree pendant is the smallest piece of jewelry I've made so far. It's copper and sterling silver and sure to sell at the pagan event I'm going to be a vendor at next week. Working with such tiny pieces of metal was fun. Now what would you pay for such a gem of jewelry?

Hate to say it but I agree. If it was larger than a keyboard key, say the size of one of those old Peace Sign necklaces, then you could sell them for $8 to $10. It still looks good though.

Make a second one. That's the perfect size for earrings!

I'm thinking the same thing about it. This one has a bail solder on the back for wearing on a chain, but it wouldn't be hard to make a set for earrings.

I been thinking about price and the difference you may think it's worth and what it actually costs to make. There is no way I can afford to sell even that tiny little pendant for just 5 dollars. Not when I pay $24.49 per troy oz for silver and I have to calculate waste when I'm hand cutting the silver disk off of a sheet that is 20 gauge thick, instead of using a disk cutter that would have cost me over $60 anyway. I'm not stamping these out, like a Chinese factory. but actually using a jeweler's saw and other tools to create one of a kind pieces of jewelry.

Then there is the time it takes me to make each pendant or earring. I just work for 3 hours on a set of earrings, like the pendant and they still need another hour of sanding down and polishing before they will be finish. So the earrings price will have to calculate the materials being about $5 worth of silver, copper that didn't cost me a cent, as it was gift from Jonwin's job and half of my day with cost of electric running drill, and heating up pickle. Also count in the A/C was running to keep air circulating so not to breath in the flumes. . Since I didn't break a saw blade, recently, it didn't get factor in, though I may have to think about getting more sand paper soon. The Abrasive cord I order 2 days ago, cost me over $7 a roll for 23 meters and I expect to use about 0.5 meters of 3 different gauge cords to sand the earrings holes smooth.

Those earrings aren't going for less then $40

Sure the Chinese knock off will be cheaper, but don't expect me to devalue my work, just because a machine and salve labor can make something I pour my soul into.

Well, obviously when you start using precious metals for the crafting, that's gotta factor in. But all you really showed was a keyboard key sized trinket.

Edit:
I'm not big on jewelry, but as a side note I don't see the value of paying for more expensive metals that are covered by other things, like paint(?). To me that's like paying for hardwood custom cabinets and painting over them.

I must have skipped over the silver part in the OP. I took it as a copper mold.

I wouldn't just buy anything that is covered in paint unless I knew it was baked on. Enameling is a skill I haven't learn yet, but most likely will take up at some point. It isn't paint, but very fine glass powers that are applied to the metal with a glue and then heated until the power melts, in a kiln or with a torch. It requires that one cleans the metal used of all oils and dirt and of course safety equipment.

Someday I hope to find some Fordite I can afford to use for jewelry. There is quite a market for the lumps of bake auto paint made into jewelry.

I made the earrings and posted picture on facebook. One cost I hadn't added in was the studs to hold the earring on. I went and order Sterling Silver ear studs as they aren't something I can easily do myself. Whey I was at it, I also got some Sterling Silver box chains to sell with the pendants I make. Now I need to go through all of my current stock and make sure it's all cataloged. Someday I hope to be able to get someone to do all the paper work for me. I love making jewelry, but not the paper work needed and I fail as a writer of descriptions of each piece I want to put on Etsy.com

I don't mind paying a premium for hand made jewelry, but it has to be exceptionally well made and also appeal to me somewhat. I'm not big on jewelry as a general rule, but I like earrings.

Yeah, I think $40/$50 is probably reasonable for tiny silver tree earrings.

Ya'll'd be surprised what pagans pay for such trinkets. I still have my little wooden container with likely $100s of dollars worth of various things like like that.

I knew a guy who was a big "tree person" that may have paid $20-$30 for that to put on his altar.
If I bought it (as a pagan) it would be perfect to keep in a spirit bag.

About the same as Christians pay for their trinkets.

It's the space between that holds all the answers.
