Kickstarter: LeVar Burton has hit the sweet spot of nostalgia and nerds. The pledges went up $5,000 in the time I started typing this post.

I pledged $35. And now I can't get the TV theme song for Reading Rainbow out of my head.

It was at about 600k at 0500pm, 800k at 0600pm when I went to eat, and now it's just below 900k. They might just squeeze their goal within the next 34 days, but it might be really close.

Reading Rainbow really should be a show that never leaves production. A lot of people would be better off growing up with it. I generally dislike Kickstarters, but once in a while a worthy cause pops up.

Edit - 0940pm: 1100k. Now I kind of wonder what they'll do with the other 34 days.

They officially hit goal in 11 hours of going live, and they're at 1.4 million already. There is a teary update from LeVar Burton explaining how they never would have thought it was possible.

I wonder if that's a record for fastest goal?

Edit: Nope, that award goes to the Ouya apparently. The Veronica Mars movie hit 1 million in four hours. Tough records to beat.

That's all kinds of awesome, can't wait to see what all they end up doing with the money. We have the Reading Rainbow app for the kids, it's good stuff.

Butterfly in the sky... Yes it'll be in my head all day now too. Smiley: lol

This sounds great. Here I was actually reading to my children, when I could have had them watching TV instead! @#%^ing rich white people. The target audience for Reading Rainbow should be poor children, not your douchebag kids who you parent by iPhone.

Oh wait. I guess I should have read the proposal. This is probably a good idea. Still, though, **** white people.

Still not quite up to two million yet. I think a lot of folks are waiting until the June household budgets kick in (despite the fact that you don't actually pay until July.)

Yup. Was having an interesting conversation about kickstarters just a week ago, and a co-worker pointed out that while they allow new ideas and projects to gain investment from a broader base of people of more modest means, it's also generally a rip-off for those who invest. If you actually invest in a start up, you usually own a percentage of the company, which includes profits from said company. Of course, random people with $50 to invest aren't likely to be involved at that ground level, but even getting in on an IPO gets you more than the equivalent of a t-shirt.

When you invest via a kickstarter, you get some one time reward or sample of the product. That's it. So basically think of it as charity. And for good causes (or cool ideas in general) that's great. But there are a lot of small businesses who basically use this to get their company off the ground. You get a t-shirt, they get a multimillion dollar company. Great deal for them, really.

Wait, which of you thought Kickstarter was some sort of "investment platform"? You, or your imaginary co-worker. That guy comes up a lot, actually, so for the sake of simplicity I'm just going to name him Arnold and refer to him as such. Was it Arnold that thought it had something to do with investing? Classic Arnold.

I've had about twenty projects I've funded over the years. Of the ones I tried to fund, three were cancelled or didn't make it. Of the ones that succeeded with their funding, I have been totally satisfied with the rewards that I've gotten.

Take Goldiblocks. I kicked in twenty bucks or something. I got some cool stickers. Goldiblocks went viral after the kickstarter succeeded and is now a profitable toy alternative for girls. They even won a damn superbowl commercial. Yeah, the sticker I paid for wasn't worth $20, but watching a company I pitched in to help get started succeed is frickin priceless.

Most of the Kickstarters I've done have been for books, though. Everything from web comics to this crazy "Foraging and Feasting" book about plucking salads from your back yard. Every single one has delivered a quality physical copy of the book into my hands, often signed by the author.

You don't contribute to Kickstarter because you are "investing" in them. You contribute because you're gonna help a company get off to a good start with no ROI expected, or you contribute because it's the only way to get some sort of physical object you want.

Down the pipeline I will be getting a weird egg spinner called a Golden Goose, and organic cricket meal chips and chocolate chip cookies.

Reading Rainbow isn't for helping poor people to read, it's for the purpose of engendering a fondness for reading for the mid-upper middle class.

I thought this was known.

Don't worry, charter schools will insist all children can read. Those who have trouble will be expelled. Free market solutions!

They suck. They completely and utterly miss the point. Instead of "dress up like a princess" it's "dress up like an engineer". Because, you know, just giving girls actual building toys and letting them play creatively would be FAR too confusing. What they need is an elaborate narrative to role play around.

I had to search to see what they were but I don't even see "dress up like an engineer"... fair ground, puppy/princess parade, dog show? It's like... "dress up like a princess, but put it together first (or have daddy do it)".

It wasn't something I sought out. But I watched it during school... cause it was part of the curriculum.

Each Goldiblocks kit comes with a story book that explains the kit, why the characters need to build XYX, and the basic engineering principles behind how to build XYZ. That was one of the major ideas behind the toy series - giving them the "elaborate narrative" with one example of how to build with the stuff and then letting the kids loose on their own.

So yeah, they did get the point. And their Facebook page is filled with all sorts of crazy weird stories and "inventions" that the girls have come up with using their kits far beyond the initial stories.

K'Nex 521 pieces for $20

GoldieBlox 34 Building pieces + Parade Float story book for $20

It's cool that tech toys are trying to market to girls I guess, but i'm not sold on the concept of 'separate' toys for the girls.

I loved Tinker Toys, but for hours of building fun nothing beat the set of Lincoln Logs that lived at Gramma's house.
