Faeblight. How does that shard hopping thing work anyway? I always see people asking for anchors, do you just group with them? All that happened when I was on a break.

Anyone take up any new hobbies or activities lately? Warm weather is here. I need a new pair of walkin' shoes.... hm. I have an elderly neighbor who has a dog. Maybe I'll offer to take him to the park in the afternoons.

I got a puppy back in the fall and have spent a good deal of time taking him on walks and to the dog park. It has been enjoyable, but I have to admit he takes up a good deal of my time, planning, and energy. Also the training aspect is a bit more work than I thought it would be. I figured having had dogs on the farm as a kid I knew what I was getting into, but there's a huge difference between and indoor dog and a farm dog. Especially when the indoor dog decides to eat your couch.

Still, he makes for good times. And he's great with the ladies.

The better part of a decade ago, someone on Alla's recommended American Gods by Gaiman, maybe smasharoo? It was a good call.

Edit - I have Big Bad Wolves sitting on my hard drive. Also watched Jorodowsky's Dune recently, kind of neat, but I am nut for all things Dune.

Book wise I the Prince of Nothing trilogy by R. Scott Bakker, new Way of Kings book by Brandon Sanderson, nothing really serious.

I devoured Sherlock & Luther (BBC). I read the Game of Thrones books when DSD recommended them in 2005, picked up the TV show over the winter and loved it. The Vikings is better than I expected it to be. Still working my way through It's Always Sunny on Netflix.

I haven't read American Gods yet, but I'm a big fan of Neil's Sandman comics. Yes, I use his first name since we share a birthday.

American Gods is a good read, though a bit predictable. There is a follow up book called Anansi Boys, which is not as good. Neverwhere is another Gaiman book that's worth reading. Currently, I'm waiting until next Tuesday to get my hands on the new Dresden Files book, Skin Games.

I find Sherlock exhausting. I think it's because they do a 90 minute episode but in a usual television "flat" plot rather than the "W" structured plot of a film (problem, false resolution, new problem, final resolution). So it feels like a really long TV episode, which of course it is. Anyway, I can't watch more than one at a time whereas I can easily watch two hour long episodes of other shows.

Ain't it the truth. I went into the first episode blind not knowing how long it was. I believe a grew a beard by the time it was done.

I didn't really like American Gods much. I'm a bit ambivalent about Gaiman altogether. His books always start with an enjoyable and/or interesting read, but then don't quite climax in a satisfactory fashion.

90minutes is long for a tv show, but I think PBS's Sherlock pulls it off ok.

It's the structure as much as the length that makes it wearying. On the other hand, the only LotR movie I've seen was the first one and that was after my son was born and I was up at all hours anyway, trawling Netflix for 3am entertainment.

What makes it wearying to me is the last 5 minutes where there is guaranteed to be a disappointing resolution because the writers of that show clearly give 0 ***** about plausibility. Which is fine, it's a character drama, the t cast is great, I still enjoy the show. Honestly, though, it would probably be a better show if they just dispensed with the detecting and opened Holmes and Watson Wedding Planning.

I got a bit confused with the thread titles and considered suggesting "2 Fast 2 Furious".

Season two of Orange is the New Black is starting June 6th. Great show. We're rewatching season one now to refresh our memory a bit.

I'd also recommend The Tudors now that I think about it. We must have rewatched the entire series about 11 times now.

I'd also recommend The Tudors

Series is greatly improved by only watching the scenes Natalie Dormer is in .

My obsession for 60s Jamaican Ska has been supplanted by the old calypso type music Mento.
If you are into exploring some old , very upbeat and even diverse music that is quite entertaining and very unique.

Some great examples:

One of my favorites:

Also, hopping over a few islands.. I found that 1930s Trininadian Calypso utterly fascinating. The recording quality is often better than some of the 60s stuff from Jamaica.. and much of it is political in nature and quite informative as to the state of affairs in 1930s Trinidad. The rhyming style often reminds me of hip-hop.. not to mention the aggressive names of the perfomers like Attila the Hun and Lord Executor.

This song is a protest of the British government that put down a riot but found no police wrong for their brutality and ignored the reason there was a riot in the first place.

others are more like American swing but with a Caribbean twist. Can't drive angry listing to some of this stuff.
