Exactly supply and demand, not everyone is capable of that kind of thing!

Yeah, I'm sorry but something like this. The couple of people I know work their butts off too. Maybe Marissa Mayer is sitting there getting paid to eat fig newtons or something, I don't know, but it just hasn't been my observation in my little corner of reality at least. I mean, I can see why the whole pay thing irks people, but the lazy part just seems flat wrong.

And a ton of people bust their asses all day and all week long all their life and still can barely get by. Waitresses pulling double shifts, working 14+hour days and they're supposed to make a living on pocket change?

I know probably 150 of the Fortune 1000 CEOs. To the point where they'd greet me by name if I ran into them. I don't know one who works "more hours each day and more days each week" than an average employee. Do you mean small business owners? Because the idea that any CEO of a large company works 40 hours is so fucking laughable that I almost can't tell if you're engaging in parody.

Yes, I do mean CEO's of small and medium companies, since they are the majority. If Torrence wants to specify large companies, then she should do so.

I'll go so far as to say effective CEOs are probably worth the seven figures they command for the big companies. But there are very, very few truly effective CEOs, and I don't think they should be earning those seven figures until they've actually done something miraculous to turn a company around or what have you.

Look at the *********** that HP or Yahoo! have found themselves in during the last few years with their horribly ineffective CEOs. And yet they all still brought home the millions.

Skills fall into three different categories: Learned skills (things taught in training), skills gained by experience (things not taught in training), and innate skills (things not taught at all.) We tend to value those skills differently. Something anyone can do with training, despite the level of difficulty or physical exertion, are valued at the lowest level. Experience gets wobbly because everyone wants it but no one wants to really pay for it, and yet if you have too much of it nobody wants you either.

It's the innate skills that make or break a CEO or any real management level position, and how some of those guys got as far as they did with their obvious lack of innate skills is an utter mystery. Charisma stat, I guess.

That's called "networking". The wheeling-and-dealing goes on out there. Which means it's being written off as a business expense. And the meetings at the strip clubs and five-star restaurants. Running a corporation is exhausting, man!

Well that's the interesting part.

Let's say your job is to solicit donations for your hospital, we have several people here that do just that. You spend your days putting together information, answering questions, and most importantly schmoozing millionaires, amongst other things of course. When all is said and done you're responsible for $5,000,000 of donations to the hospital.

On the other hand you have someone like me. I process samples, analyze data, advise clients, put together information for papers and grants and such. When all is said and done you could put me in for somewhere around $100,000 in income.

Do you deserve to get paid 50x as much as me?

It's all symbiotic, or circular at least. If you weren't analyzing samples, there'd be no product for the donation solicitor to solicit donations with.

With that said, just be grateful you get a pay-check that is something above minimum wage!

I honestly didn't realize how much value I was bringing to my department simply by virtue of geographic location until I was told how much happier our business partner in the other department was this last development cycle. They never had anyone on-site before. They love having me around to pop in and ask how things are going.

Made me feel better for staying on ZAM so much of the day when I had nothing else to do. Just being available is a huge help to them.
