No one's holding a gun to my head, yet I still allow my taxes to be spent on crap in TN.

Do you know any CEOs? The majority of the ones I know work more hours each day and more days each week than any of their employees.

Yeah, I'm sorry but something like this. The couple of people I know work their butts off too. Maybe Marissa Mayer is sitting there getting paid to eat fig newtons or something, I don't know, but it just hasn't been my observation in my little corner of reality at least. I mean, I can see why the whole pay thing irks people, but the lazy part just seems flat wrong.

And a ton of people bust their asses all day and all week long all their life and still can barely get by. Waitresses pulling double shifts, working 14+hour days and they're supposed to make a living on pocket change?

Let's define work, though. Sitting in an office, talking to other people about how to make cutbacks that cost people jobs isn't really "work". Have you ever seen that show undercover boss? These guys can't do the jobs their employees do, but because they sit in an office for *more* hours a day that somehow makes them worth billions and their employees worth nothing?

Time spent at a place doesn't necessarily equal the overwhelming level of effort you are attributing to CEOS.

And for the record, yea I know a few. They spend a lot of time at the golf course next to my house.

To be fair, that's part of why you hire other people. I wouldn't expect the president of the company I work for (commercial landscape) to be fully capable in everything from certified payroll to repairing dump trucks. This is a smallish company though and he's at least fluent enough in each to have a conversation -- I imagine it's worse in a major company hiring thousands of employees. But does the CEO of Caterpillar really need to know how to put the tracks on a bulldozer?

Am I a Big Business Conservative now? Smiley: frown

Only if you lay off half your staff and pay the rest minimum wage to increase profits. Shareholders gotta eat too, y'know.

You're right, but that's kind of my point. He can't do certain jobs, but others can. Why is the CEO worth so much more than the people he has to get to do these other, often more strenuous, jobs? My comment was regarding the pay disparity, mostly. Sure, some of these guys put in a lot of hours. So do their employees. In fact, America is at the top of the list as far as hours worked in a day\week, but only *some* jobs seem to carry *importance*.

Maybe it was a bad example considering the context of the post I was responding to, but CEO pay quadrupling over the last few years while we can't even get a 3 dollar an hour minimum wage increase through the senate... it's just sour.

I don't really disagree with you. I can understand the logic of why the CEO of McDonalds is worth more than a guy who pushes the Big Mac button on the register or throws old lettuce into the dumpster. I can also appreciate that massive wage disparity isn't good for the country and low wages help stratify the economic classes even while some people pretend there's all sorts of class mobility. Unfortunately, it's pretty impossible to have a decent discussion about it because people tend to cling to the fringes and won't admit that there's limits to their stance because now it's not as pure and you need actually start looking at how much is too much. I was just doing my part by giving a bit on the fact that there's justification for a high ranked figure to get paid more than a low ranked worker (if not infinitely more).

Edit: Also my spell check is okay with "dumpster" rather than "Dumpster". In your face, trademark!

Is it their ability to understand a supply/demand curve, exploit the workers, extort their customers and still sleep at night?

Our CEO brings in millions of dollars a year by suckering getting people to donate money to us; which is more than my contribution via grants and usage fees and such. I'm fine with him making more money than me, provided the donations keep flowing and the money is managed well.
