I've yet to play a new/newish MMO that wasn't fundamentally bad.

DayZ Standalone is still in Alpha; but even as is it makes for a great gaming experience IMO plus it's pretty cheap at the moment... if you're in to the survivalist/zombies stuff. The bulk of the game-play (when not looting and preventing starvation) is more about interactions with other players. There are no quests or experience points so everyone is on level playing field. What makes this game most interesting is when you die you start completely over again.. so it really makes for good heart-pounding suspense when dealing with people.
A friend and I once sat pinned in a building for a half hour after getting shot at after a multi-hour looting session.. hearts pounding before we decided it was safe to make a run for it.

Eventually they will add vehicles, constructable bases, etc. There are also things to worry about like disease and blood types (for transfusions).

Some of the more amusing aspects of the game are things such as.. being held prisoner (with handcuffs) and being stripped and force-fed disinfectant for the amusement of your captors.

The map is absolutely humungous and is real to life scale. It's a good break from the standard auto-attack, rinse, repeat, turn-in-crap to an NPC..
Total sandbox.
After watching a few of the vids of people playing it I had to get it.

Sounds a lot like Rust. My only real problem with rust so far is the number of people who hack and get away with it. So far the only time I've ever been caught and killed by another player is when they are flying a mile above me through the air and head-shotting me with aim bot. They then proceed to do it to everyone on the server, single-handedly ruining the game for everyone.

I found a new server with active admins on it. Only now I'm being accused of hacking every time I kill another player, or manage to get away when I'm being fired at.

Edit:

--which reminds me. If you hold "V" in Rust you can talk to other players who are near you. I was very startled when an angry-sounding female admin teleported to me to warn me about hacking after I had been accused. It felt like talking to a bill collector on the phone. I was really aggravated that someone would accuse me of hacking, then had to talk to someone in voice chat about it.

I played Rust for a while and you can read my closing thoughts on it here. TL;DR is that it's an interesting premise but it quickly tops out and I don't have space in my schedule for a game with mandatory play demands. Neat when you're getting started though.

Plus, yeah, hackers a-plenty.

Oh yeah.

When you log out, your avatar 'sleeps' in the world and anyone passing buy can kill and loot him. After 24 hours, wooden structures you built begin to decay unless you log in to open and close the doors. You can see the addictive nature of this; you just spent a week raising yourself from naked chump hunted for sport to owning a five room, two level fortress, clad in Kevlar armor and carrying an assault rifle with a laser scope and silencer and now you're going to lose it all because you took a weekend off?

I don't know how long ago you played, but this varies from server to server. The one I'm on now has the crafting of explosives disabled, though still possible to get through air drops. This makes it so explosives are rare and valuable and people aren't just going to go around bombing wooden shacks. They've also set up an economy system of sorts where you gain "Rusts" for killing mobs and players which they just added today.

My fortress rests on top of a very tall mountain near abundant resources along the east coast of Rust Island. There is only one very steep path to climb to access it, and it is well hidden between a maze of rocks. Recently my stepdaughter has joined me, and I've set her up with some nice gear and her own room. I also feel like I'm wasting a lot of time though... we were both up until 5am this morning building up our "house" and crafting weapons.

For me it was less about raiding buildings than the structure rot requiring regular gameplay. It was like Farmville with the "you need to play or your crops will rot" thing. Besides, raiding for good or ill was about the only thing left to do once you got established. I might go back as it evolves further but the structure rot alone makes me loathe to spend any time building back up again.

On the server we play on, structure decay is set to "1." I'm not sure what that means exactly, but supposedly structure decay is extremely slow compared to what is standard.

If anyone wants to join us, access the console in game and enter net.connect rustedup.myftp.org:28015. The server is white listed, but it doesn't take long to be added after registering here: http://rustedup.myftp.org:28017/
