It's about 40% general talk & politics, 20% reminiscing about times people remembered who Dennis Miller was, 10% telling jokes and 30% laughing at the joke he just told.

Seriously that was a thing? So what, they just stole it from the Canadians and added 8 minutes or something? Smiley: dubious

Would I lie to you?

I guess it eventually ran 13 episodes, though I stopped hearing about it after the pilot.

Reading through the description of the show, I can see why it probably fell flat. In The Daily Show, Jon Stewart acts as a straight man to all the crazy **** going down around him. (He's also a genius with well-timed eyebrow raises.) He points out the absurdity of things that are true.

Half Hour News Hour seemed to be trying to parody him, by having the liberal host be skeptical of things that are not actually absurd or strange, but well accepted.

Parodying a straight man just doesn't work.

Somewhere in the world there must be people debating whether this show was funny or not-- only because it was right-leaning and all of these scathing reviews I've been reading are bias from the liberal media.

And fortunately he's out of work now! Though I really wish he'd ended up on Live with Kelly.

Looks more like an SNL skit with a laugh track than The Daily Show.

So exactly like an SNL skit.

I'm assuming that segment was intended to be a counter to the Colbert Report. Considering that's precisely what his show is about, except with him playing the clueless stereotypical conservative.

I was referencing the guy whose clip starts about 3:15 into that, with the fake WTC "conspiracy theorist." Not the main anchor.

Haven't watched any clips. Just read the wiki that was linked. But the description you're giving (and the one in the wiki) makes it seem like a counter to Colbert, not Stewart. Colbert's whole deal is playing a clueless conservative who has ridiculous over the top responses to otherwise ordinary things. He's not the "straight man", but designed to be the butt of the joke (intentionally). Same deal with that segment (assuming you're talking about the one I think you are).

Regardless of who they were trying to emulate, it sucked and only lasted long enough to burn off the one season.

That's the selling point!

I suppose technically Fox has Red Eye, which is funny, in a "trying to take silly positions about topics, but accidentally ends out being more serious than a typical round table discussion on MSNBC" kinda of way. And no, I'm not actually kidding about that.

Colbert has his moments, but Daily Show is much better.

I tried watching that video of Half Hour New Hour. Awful. Just awful. I'm sure it had potential, but they seemed to forget one thing - Stewart isn't all about bashing Republicans. He'll give it to the Democrats just as often when they do something stupid.

Stewart is liberal but The Daily Show is more about mocking the news than anything else. Certain people refuse to believe it but that core part of it is something you're not going to find on a knock-off hosted on an actual news channel.

Edit: Holy Christ. A couple of those jokes had potential but those two hosts were just... terrible. All the comedic timing of a sack of rice and that chick's voice was like getting stapled in the ears.
