They're probably in a secret terrorist compound that is accessed only through a hole in the bottom of the ocean.

Yeah, at this point if that was the case you'd think someone would have spotted them by now.

Some speculation I heard was that the strange veering west but then maintaining altitude could be explained by the auto-pilot systems engaging even if everyone else was unresponsive and all the communications were down.

But, they should have had a lot more fuel to go beyond the Straight of Malacca if that was the case.

Does that change if they leave standard travel lanes and fly at a lower altitude? Are they say, fighting air currents on the proposed new vector? I have no idea, just spit-balling. Presumably whatever could cause incapacitation of the pilots to the point that permanent autopilot was the only option could also cause a catastrophic failure in short order.

Maybe the plane they tracked was the plane that shot down the 777...

As disorganized as the Malaysian airline industry seems to be, 'forgetting to fuel up' doesn't seem unreasonable.

The best case scenario:

They really were abducted by aliens-- who took them back to their home planet/dimension to be integrated into their advanced civilization or as household pets.

Still needle in a haystack; oceans are big?

I mean, if they were in control enough of an airplane to change course and try to head somewhere else you'd think a survivable splashdown would be conceivable. In lieu of the whole hijacking, suffocate-then-autopilot, terrorist, alien, meteor, blowed up immediately things of course.

Ever optimistic I suppose.

Life boats all come equipped with EPIRBS and flares - not to mention all the cell phones. Though maybe they're all just hanging from flotsam and jetsam.

Yeah, that one was a bit odd. He was a good distance away from where the plane was, or at least where they'd thought it'd be, like 300 miles or so.

I dunno, it certainly didn't sound good though. Smiley: frown

I'm betting time travelers from the future came back right before the crash and took them to the future to help rebuild humanity by sending them all to the past.

So apparently the communication stuff was switched off manually/on purpose and Malaysian authorities are now suspecting a hijacking (possibly by one of the pilots).

The strong evidence suggesting the plane changed, or was off-course without communicating with traffic control leaves open the possibility that the jet was stolen. Perhaps the crew, or some of the crew was involved.

I've now decided the plane just crashed in the ocean somewhere and through a whole list of laze fair and poorly maintained standard operating procedures all debris sank before searchers were ever sent to the proper location.

The stolen plane thing thing is just a cover for the negligence of Malaysian Air Control.

So many countries claiming the jet couldn't have flown over them because they have "good" radar coverage. My money is on the jet making a mockery of that. Some radar guy sleeping at 3am and dropping the ball or something.

Actually, it's probably more likely that countries are withholding information in order not to expose their tracking/spying equipment.
