From a government standpoint, not having to make the interest payments would be nice. We'd have to find someone else to make our iPads though.

Even if Russia rolled right into Kiev you would be hard pressed any foreign entity willing to go to War with Russia (and likely China). You could put sanctions on them, and they would just cut of energy supply to Europe.

Right, because nothing sticks it to the other guy like ceasing your insanely profitable energy trade with him. Wait. They probably have gold, right? Is that the punchline? Ruble on the gold standard?

Information war is in full swing.

It is kinda amazing after the world was told the Ukraine coup was cause by Poland. People old enough to remember certain things were reminded of the old style soviet propaganda. Good times.

Anyhoo, looks like US collectively ( hah ) decided to make fun of Putin. Yeah, it is propaganda too, but at least people get to read ****.

People still "listen" to the stations?

Local "useful idiot" claims he knows stuff.

The whole story came from Komsomolskaya Pravda ( not the most reputable source, but still ).

In a picture is worth a thousands words category this one takes the cake. Maidan is now my official favorite revolution. Take that fraternite egalite liberte.

You will never party this hard.

I find it amazing. Unlike Lolgaxe, I am still human and capable of jawdropping.:P

Preliminary numbers from Crimean referendum are over 80% voter turnout and with half the ballots over 90% wishing to rejoin Russia.

Impressive number, especially since only ~60% of people in Crimea are native Russian and everyone else was boycotting the referendum.

Given that the option to remain under Ukraine wasn't an option, it could very well be "legit".

I hadn't been following but I read that the other day. The only ballot options were "Become part of Russia" and "Become an independent country". Seems legit.

Edit: I can half accept that people would choose rejoining Russia over going independent if those are their only two options but the ballot itself obviously wasn't intended to see how people felt about the full range of actual options. There's that vaunted Democracy we're hypocrites if we don't accept! Smiley: laugh

I listen to news radio all the time, both over the airwaves (AM even) and from the interwebs. Maybe I'm just showing my age.

Well, Chechnya voted for 99% for Putin while there has been intermittent separatist warfare.

Maybe Russians really just love being beat down by Putin?

If you google that it was an exaggeration, the choices were to join Russia or stay with Ukraine but with more autonomy.

Given that in the Crimean parliament people who weren't even present for the voting "voted" to join Russia I'd say publicly stating you're not going to vote and don't see this as a legal referendum is probably the best option.

What was said was that there was no option to remain the same. The option to "stay with Ukraine but with more autonomy" effectively says "be independent". So while there is a difference in wording, it's not much of an exaggeration.

According to the HP the ballot choices were:

Quote:
Are you in favour of the reunification of Crimea with Russia as a part of the Russian Federation?

or

Are you in favour of restoring the 1992 Constitution and the status of Crimea as a part of Ukraine?

Option B seems like the status quo option then and apparently my casual interest in the topic made me misinformed.
