Well google already heavily censors their search results by default, so it must be the former. I'd think that advertisers would want to reach as broad an audience as possible, though. This seems to me like google getting more evil.

I dunno, the response didn't get much thought admittedly.

Mostly just that people fixated on viewing boobies are highly unlikely to be purchasing anything unrelated to said boobies at that time, and the easier it is to tell which sites are which the easier it is to get the proper adds appearing on the those sites. If you have to pay to have your links appear, you only want it appearing when people are likely to actually click your link.

Or something like that?

That should just be part of the ad targeting. IE if people rarely click on ads for a pizza place when browsing pornography they shouldn't serve the ads there, however if people actually are buying a lot of tricycles while browsing xxxsexmachines.com they should be listed as ads there. There is no content filtering needed, just appropriate content for the site. It's fundamentally retarded to try to shift a forum towards being a more ad friendly environment rather than using ads that target the users of the forum.

Users use a forum product not in order to better see the advertising, but in order to see content.

Yeah, but swearing in other languages is unpatriotic and builds enclaves.

Nah, brand management is a pretty massive investment by companies. You don't want your ads showing up next to content that could negatively impact your brand image. Sure, there's probably a strong correlation between people who watch **** and people who drink Coke. But Coke doesn't particularly want their brand being connected with bukake in those customer's minds.

And they're not crazy. Studies on branding pretty firmly reinforce the idea that control is preferable.

So then give advertisers that choice and then host ads, (perhaps at a discount if it warrants it) for advertisers who do wish to advertise on sites with more offensive content. Plenty of advertisers would like to market to the natural community of gamers rather than only those gamers who want a sanitized environment.

It's funny that you mention that...

NSFW NSFW

Sprite is one of Coke Cola's products in case you didn't know for some reason or another. Also this isn't a legit ad, but I digress.

Yeah, i really don't understand why they don't have "tiers" for this. You'd think google would want to get in on the **** ads.

I wouldn't be surprised if Google DID have a **** site option, at least through some company under its control.

I think the bigger issue is setting up any kind of realistic tiering option.

This is a gaming site. Google would do best by providing ads that are most likely to be attractive to gamers (gaming-related ones, obviously, but also ads suitable to the site's demographic). But forums like the Asylum really break the mold there - a lot of the ads they want to run they don't want to run alongside a discussion about whether or not condoms are best for the **** industry.

Is having a "adult content possible" tier really going to help Google's profits? Probably not. Particularly not when the website doesn't really have another advertising option in the first place.

And the thing is, Google also needs to establish their brand name, just like the companies advertising through them. Google has decided it doesn't want its brand associated with smut. I'm not surprised.

Not saying I'm happy about this at all. But I'm not remotely shocked. From a business perspective, it's smart. As a consumer, I lose out. But Google has to market their adsense service to businesses, not the people visiting the website. We're the product, not the customer.

Then they need to stop providing search results for smut, or an image page that displays said smut without actually going to the website. Right now Google is known at "the best search engine to find **** with", unless there is another that is better than them.

But this isn't about delivering appropriate ad content to a site - at least that's not what I took from the explanation of the change. This is Google saying "we're not going to play ball with you if you don't stop using bad words". That means no adsense at all if the asylum breaks a certain threshold of what Google considers "questionable content".

I would guess that zam has picked a category that they want to fit in based on audience and potential ad revenue, and google is setting rules within that space.

Yeah, that.

It sucks, but the reality is that the content and visitors of the Asylum (and to a lesser extent the OOT) are completely different from the content of the rest of the network. Because Zam probably stands to make way more money through ad content targeting a specific demographic linked to gaming, they're going to have to follow the rules that Google sets for gaming-demographic ad content.

Reddit sucks as a forum substitute. I don't even know if a topic has a new post unless I open it, because there's no "last post date" feature. And lack of avatars makes distinguishing posters a pain. We'd be better off with a free phpBB host.

I've always gone through periods of posting and nonposting.

And during the periods of nonposting, I didn't necessarily plan to come back. Usually it was because the gaming forums brought me back (new game, or back into an old game).

I don't really use Zam much for gaming purposes anymore, beyond the general game forum. So IDK. Maybe if I disappeared and I wanted to check out the Wildstar forums or something...

Though the problem has consistently been that the community here is pretty established, now. So it's like walking into a room with a lot of people screaming and you know who none of them are, though you might spot a few familiar (disgusted) faces scattered throughout the room.

Kind of what the FFXIV forum feels like. It's a hellhole, but I've been wandering in for the masochistic entertainment.
