Philip Seymour Hoffman has been found dead, it has been reported.

A personal assistant to the 46-year-old actor is said to have found him dead at 11.30am this morning, a source told the New York Post, who are also reporting that Hoffman was found in the bathroom with a hypodermic needle still in his arm.

That's too bad. He was a fine actor.

But as you know, lots of intelligent people use recreational drugs.

Doesn't drug use correlate positively with intelligence?

If anything, this should only make us respect him more.

I bet he had been through rehab and either didn't realize how hard the same dose would hit him, or bought from a new source with a stronger product. Being illegal and all, there's no product standardization.

Not that people don't OD on prescription drugs, too, of course.

Implying pot is a gateway drug? You do know that pot and heroin are completely different highs...well maybe you don't.

Pot > Heroin isn't like Casual Drinks > Raging alcoholic.
Its like Beer Drunk > Wine Drunk. Different buzzes, different sh*t.

For example I hate Wine, but love beer.
I am a huge fan of Pot, and in 15 years of smoking it...I have never once imagined using Heroin to get a "better" buzz.

Maybe he's just playing dead. Too soon?

Always found him a little overrated, to be honest. Good in some things, Boogie Nights, some other ensemble pieces with strong directors, but man, if you let him, he would overreact his way out of anything. Capote was a fucking mess, and almost certainly the second best movie ABOUT TRUMAN CAPOTE released that year. Heath Ledger probably killed himself over being robbed of the Oscar for that marketing package ****

Nope just him questioning my interpretation of "stick with". My mistake for assuming "stick with marijuana" means continue to use weed, and then using my life experience as support in my disagreement with that statement. (seeing as I have no desire to use cocaine, or heroin despite using pot for 15 years.)

Mostly just this line if you must know.

You can say whatever you want about my smoking of marijuana its not going to stop me, just like it being illegal means @#%^ all to me. I use it because it is medically superior to any pills you can buy in a store. If paranoia is a side effect of having better overall health than the average North American that is a price I will happily pay.

Oh, sorry, might have been a poor choice of words on my part. I wasn't implying that pot was a gateway, only that as a "soft" drug it's not nearly as dangerous.

As for the man and his career, I myself didn't care much for him. Sure, I'll acknowledge that he's generally well-regarded as an excellent actor, as Smash pointed out he tends to overdo it. But then the only roles I seem to remember are the smarmy asshole types, like in Nobody's Fool, Scent of a Woman and The Talented Mr. Ripley.

Random note, just about the ODing part. I work for an addictions education center, and a lot of our trainings are on heroin right now (since it's the biggest issue in NJ atm).

Most heroin addicts start with prescription pills. But pills are so expensive, that their habits quickly end up costing $1-5k a month. Once all their lines of funding dry up for pills, they move to heroin (which is one of the cheapest drugs you can buy).

And at that point, it's not really a choice. Addiction, particularly when you're in a state of withdrawal, essentially turns off other high-order desires in your brain. Sometime starting to go through withdrawals (or already in them) because they can't get pills IS going to take heroin if they have access to it. It's essentially a survival behavior at that point - their brain is screaming at them that they need it to survive, and nothing else matters next to that.

And because of that particular issue, even knowing rationally that a dosage could kill you ceases to matter, because depending on how dependent you are, and how deep into the withdrawal you've gotten, your brain just isn't capable of rationally processing that information. The only thing that matters is that your instinct is that you need the drug to survive (even if you know it'll kill you).

Also worth noting that, being so dirt cheap, heroin is usually one of the (for lack of a better word) filthiest drugs out there. It's cut with all kinds of crap. We had a ton of deaths in NJ this year from tainted heroin coming out of Atlantic City.

Really quite sad. One of the worst parts of heroin abuse is actually the sheer number who get started on this path of addiction literally. Addictions to prescription drugs, legitimately prescribed for pain, is extremely common. Most people manage to keep their addiction reasonable. Some of them don't.

Obviously, the less wealthy you are, the more likely you'll end up on heroin. A lot depends on your ability to pay for the pills.

That would be fentanyl. A pretty common topical medication for chronic pain. The normal form is as time released patch, but if taken orally, it apparently gets you pretty high. There have been at least twenty-six deaths around these parts from type of heroin mixed with it called Theraflu.

I'll stick my 2 cents in here and say that I totally didn't get the "pot is a gateway to heroin" from that at all. I got the "pick pot instead!" message. I mean, if a vegetarian responds to a news story talking about the health detriments of eating red meat by saying "why can't people just stick to eating fruits and veggies?", I don't assume they're making a snide remark about how eating fruits and veggies is a gateway to eating steak.

So yeah. I think you way read into that statement.

But then the only roles I seem to remember are the smarmy asshole types, like in Nobody's Fool, Scent of a Woman and The Talented Mr. Ripley.

I didn't see anything that great about him either, and frankly some of the hero-worship I've seen in various threads and comments is a little nauseating. It's like people think the hunger games was real and he really did save katniss or something with how they go on about him being heroic and 'one of the greats of our time'.

Give me a break. He was just another idiot actor who memorized lines and then snorted them.

Well, let's hang on for a minute. I don't think he was an all time great actor, but he was a good serviceable movie actor. That's ASTONISHINGLY hard to be. Seems like it should be easy, but it isn't. In the same way that a third string NFL quarterback isn't an "all time great" quarterback, he's still in the .0001% high end of talent for that role. Same is probably true here. There's on acting "autotune". To be a working character actor with his profile level you have to be special.

No, Smash, he agreed with you. That means you think what he said.

That's how this works.

I remembered that after I posted, but I gave so little of a **** I didn't edit it. Admitting that probably gets me onto some tumblr hit list, but what doesn't? Eh? Eh?

It's still cool to rag on tumblr, right?

Not for a cisgendered able bodied non ethnic y chromosome haver. Are you part Cherokee, maybe? That might be alright.
