...living wage. for some reason those words were cut out of the title? Smiley: confused

Linky

Quote:
Lacy T. (apparently that's not made up.... what's in a name?) accused the Raiders in a lawsuit Wednesday of failing to pay the Raiderettes minimum wages for the work they do, both on the sidelines and in the community for charity. The team also sticks them with travel costs and levies "fines" that eat into their meager salary, she said.

Quote:
The Raiderettes' contract calls for $125 per home game, or $1,250 per season, she said. That amounts to less than $5 an hour, counting hours of unpaid work in rehearsals, performances at 10 charity events and participation in the team's annual swimsuit photo-shoot, the suit said.

While those are some ugly numbers, the amount other teams cheer squads get aren't a whole lot better.

I was struck by two things:

1) You'd think even a team like the Raiders could afford to pay its cheerleaders minimum wage.

2) Despite the abysmal salary there's still hefty competition to be on the squads.

I'm not sure which I find more unsettling. Smiley: rolleyes

Thoughts?

I dont think they're paid too little, I think the players are paid too much.

Baseball salaries scare me more than football ones.

They don't have cheerleaders, so can pocket the difference.

They should, it'd be money well spent. There's a lot of entertainment value for minimal cost apparently. Smiley: rolleyes

The said thing is that cheerleaders, especially the competitive college squads, are every inch the athletes that the guys on the field are. Part gymnastics, part dance.

I guess the assumption is that they'll be married to rich guys who take care of them and the abysmal wages are a token compensation for being eye candy? Smiley: confused

The interesting thing, well according to the articles at least, is that those women actually make a good amount more than the professional NFL cheerleader. Which seems pretty messed up? Smiley: confused

The impression I got is that having "NFL Cheerleader" on your resume was a nice boost to those who were looking to make money modeling and such, and the cheer-leading was a more of a means to an end in this case. They tolerate the poor pay because of the added potential for more money from elsewhere. I have no idea how true that is, of course, just repeating what I'd read elsewhere.

I figured that they treated cheerleading as a step up, but then it occurred to me that I couldn't name a single former professional cheerleader, much less one turned "pro" as a supermodel or something. Of course, maybe I could if I was a modeling agent or something but it seemed odd that not a single person came to mind.

Surely there are a few former cheerleader pornstars.

I hate the fact that I know this, but...Paula Abdul.

That's the only one I can think of though.

It's not that strange though. How many models do you know? A few dozen maybe? That's the top 0.001% or something, it's not that strange that you can't think of a cheerleader gone supermodel.

Hence my caveat that I'm not a modeling agent and, if I were, perhaps it would be different.

And here I thought that every time Gbaji was right about something an angel got it's wings. This makes far more sense.

Ironically, I ran across one via completely unrelated internet wandering a week ago. Charisma Carpenter (from Buffy and Angel) was a Charger's cheerleader.

Unrelated web browsing taught me that Sarah Shahi from "Person of Interest", and the now canceled shows "Chicago Fire" and "Fairly Legal" is a former NFL cheerleader. So now we have three!

I have a friend that was a college dancer and later became a professional NBA dancer, I don't think her current job has anything to do with dancing. I didn't even know she was a dancer till I went to my first NBA game (free tickets from my sister's job) and thought I saw her. Sent her a text as a joke..only to find out 'twas her. I then asked for tickets....Smiley: laugh

I love Person of Interest. She looks a lot better in that picture, they tone her down on the show. Also, when did Chicago Fire get canceled?

IMDB for her entry said 2012-2013 so I assumed it was. But if I click on the show, it says 2012- so maybe not and she just stopped appearing in 2013?

I dunno... someone call Danalog and tell him to fix this shit up so I can understand it.
