Fame does stuff. He's been around long enough that he can write a book and it's news, or at least worth a brief story in the opinion section or something. If it helps Rodman seems to have gotten more coverage for his little visit and related tirade.

Your "only one real question" is why a wartime Secretary of Defense's memoir gets attention?

How is he famous? If you asked an average American who Gates is, they sooner point to Bill Gates than him. I am willing to bet one Bendal over 70% of USssians never heard of him.

I will admit that watching Rodman was hilarious. His posse slowly shuffling away as he rambled on made my day.

No just attention; other news gets passed over to make sure there is a spot for his memoirs.

I am obviously out of touch with people these days, but isn't VA chef scandal more of a good gossip than 200 pages of: Obama didn't listen to me the way Bush did. He actually asked me questions without just signing the papers.?

Bob Gates is such an unpleasant sounding name.

If my last name were Gates I'd name my daughter Pearly.

I've not read the book, but heard a brief interview with former defense sec. and have heard some of the various and sundry quotes of the book that are making the waves. Bob sounds very bitter . Bitterness is a pretty overbearing emotion.

Why is it newsworthy?

It's not really newsworthy. It's disparaging of the current, and liberal administration. Some behind-the-scenes conservative pac has probably funded the whole thing - the book, the publicity, etc.

..and who knows - it might be a good read.

So all her lovers can claim that they were able to enter the Pearly Gates?

Actually, much of the book is spent ******** about how terrible Congress is to work with, too. He whined that Obama's heart wasn't in the Afghanistan strategy and he just wanted out - funny enough, that's what a lot of other Democrats wanted too - but then he said that was nothing compared to the incompetent nincompoops down the street.

That's a scary thought, and not recommended. You can be famous in a Randy Travis or Steve Prefontaine kind of way. Or can we just say notable?

From what I gathered he had plenty to say about everyone who's been there the last 10-15 years or so, regardless of what party they were hiding behind.

Basically what Joph said...

It only seems creepy because of the old bearded guy in the tunic with the big book sitting in front.

I've heard it described as "the little man in the boat" before, but never the old bearded guy in the tunic.

Pretty accurate, actually. One of the better SecDefs ever. Low profile, respected by the community, strong organizational skills, etc. Difficult to overstate the clusterfuck Rumsfeld left things in, that it was basically a non issue is a massive tribute to Gates' competency. Not I guy I'd have dinner with or vote for if he ran for public office, but definitely excelled at that role.

This is kinda what I thought. The guy was a GW Bush appointee that Obama chose to retain, and almost everyone, including Democrats, was fine with it or thought it was a good idea. So he must have been doing something right.

Or not enough wrong to be considered a problem, or the alternatives were less desirable.

Yeah, I didn't mean to imply that he was incompetent but rather I'm sure he has a lot of blame to spread around to Congress, the administration(s), etc and little for himself. He left the position pretty broadly praised so I don't think this is image rehabilitation but perhaps he's trying to reconcile what he thought should have happened with the reality of it.

That he gives the current president more flack than the previous isn't really surprising for the reason you stated: he was appointed by Bush. It stands to reason that his views were more in line with Bush's than Obama's given that the two presidents had widely different opinions on the conflicts.

Likely just wants to cash in and score a few petty grudge points. Haven't read the book, probably won't ever. Gist of the summaries I've seen seem to be "people are idiots, Joe Biden is probably developmentally disabled in some significant way" nothing surpriing, really.

Only if I start with all the resources. I assume I'll be on the other side of the asymmetry at the beginning of my conquest, so I'll need someone more creative with more energy. Putin, maybe.
