I saw this article about gingerbread houses as decorations in competing hotels. I can't remember the last time I made anything more complicated than gingerbread men.

It's funny (and disgusting) that the article mentions that some of the gingerbread used in one of the houses is seven years old. May as well use fruitcake at that point. The house frame is also made of wood, which seems like cheating to me.

The fat chef made the edible house. Figures. "Never trust a skinny chef", right?

They both spend a lot of highly-paid time repairing damage to their respective houses, just like Hansel and Gretel's witch must have done. She, I imagine, was a DIY expert, not having access to chefs. Or carpenters, if she wanted to cheat.

Edited to fix the link so it goes to page 1 and the story doesn't appear to start with some anonymous guy chewing... which, you know, is appropriate but confusing.

Slightly smaller but this house you can actually (attempt to) make yourself. you know, in case you feel like wasting a day or more making a gigantic mess of your kitchen.

I have nothing to add to the discussion on the big gingerbread houses though, it's a attraction and brings in people I guess?

Oh, I like that one. Very cottage-y.

Yeah, I guess. Gingerbread houses are one of those fascinating cultural holdovers from a slower pace of life that get "updated" into these monstrosities that are just for show. It's like making a hook rug out of the very finest silk (which I'm sure someone has).

It's probably good fun to make too, provided you don't mind taking a long time and having spare ingredients for when things go wrong (mainly the big pieces, don't want to end up with a crack house instead of a cottage).

I wonder why gingerbread houses are a Christmas thing?

I think I'd prefer a chocolate cottage.

Makes about as much sense as a gaudily decorated tree or a fat guy in a red suit who obsessively keeps track of children.

Huh, the fat white guy who gets his his thrills by putting strange little kids on his lap?

I'm sharing this x-mas video. It's an a capella version of Little Drummer Boy. It's not as good as all that, but supposedly it's on it's way to Viral. Do your part.

I assume it's because ginger and molasses will keep well, and may have been the only flavor ingredients left by mid winter? I don't know, just makin' stuff up. Chocolate was a luxury item for a long time. /shrug

I guess it is warm and wintery. I associate the Gingerbread House with Hansel and Gretel versus St.Nick.

Molasses was the staple sweetener for a long time here in the US. Sugar was hard to come by. Boston, back in the day, had a big molasses tank bust open and kill a bunch of people.
