My point when I wrote that was that if we are to argue about where the line between "things we can discriminate against" and "things we can't discriminate against" is, we should be looking at things close to the line, not things far from it in one direction or the other. Hence, it's more relevant (I would argue necessary) to argue that sexual orientation is not like hair color versus arguing that it's not like drug addiction.
Oh I get that, at least I think I do, but it seems your line is in a very different place.

gbaji wrote:
I hope to hell that makes sense.
Does now, I think. My difference is probably that I think that discrimination based on physical appearance should be illegal too, hence the disconnect it seems.

gbaji wrote:
You're free to make that argument, but our system starts with the assumption that we're each free to do anything we want, and then we place a small number of restrictions on that where necessary. What you're proposing is the exact opposite and sorta flies in the face of some pretty basic concepts of a free society. We should have to make the argument for each and every exception, not the other way around. And what I'm asking here is for someone to actually make that argument.

I can live with that. However once you can crank out several scientific studies (yes I know I only linked a single one, but there were several others I skipped over to cherry-pick it) showing there's discrimination, and that it's having an unjustified impact on the earnings of a particular group, then we should make a law forbidding this kind of discrimination. Whether that be hair color, sex, lack of manly biceps, or sexual orientation. Just because we're behind the ball on one form of discrimination is no reason not to try and stop another form of it.

This kind of thing is good for our economy and good for our society. We want the best person to get hired for a job, the one where the employer will get the most bang for their buck. We also want people to be re-assured that hard work is rewarded, that's how our American dream works. If there are particular groups that are faced with diminished prospects in our economy that negatively affects all of us.

Says who?

The only assumption we start with is that we're all individuals that have to survive and prosper together on one minuscule chunk of rock floating around in an infinite space. that's about it.

You're not free to do whatever you want. Never were, never will be.

Of course the employer is free to do whatever THEY want, because, you know, liberty. You subhuman garbage people are free to do what you want as well, provided what you want to do is eat dirt.

I'm a middle-aged straight white guy so fuck all y'all. I got mine.

Someone on Etsy does, but they've been sold already.

Funny that you would post that, this is the image of the one sold on Etsy.

I assume that you are being facetious as your whole argument is a false equivalency.

As previously stated, every person has the right to have their own feelings, good, bad or indifferent. The issue becomes when your feelings affect others, i.e. not hiring someone based off of their sexuality. So, when you are trying to force people to have certain feelings towards a group, it's no different than trying to force people to have certain feelings towards a group.

Americans are doing better at speed skating than Canadians. Especially now that Jeremy Wotherspoon and Cindy Klassen have quit and Christine Nesbitt isn't anywhere near as good as she used to be and more importantly with no new generation at all. The USA still has Shani Davis (the only successful black guy in skating ever) and although he isn't as good anymore as when he set his world records he's still good and with Brittany Bowe and Heather Richardson there are some serious contenders for Olympic medals on the women's side.

No one can be forced to have "feelings" toward a group. That's ridiculous. You can just enact laws that protect groups from discrimination.

I know what Speed Skating is, I just wasn't expecting the small mass of sports facts as the reply to my earlier post.

Aye.

Well it is Aethien, his country is flat and has lots of ice in the winter. I suppose these things happen.

Also, Viking is a Dutch brand. And I don't get why the sport isn't more popular elsewhere. There are people going over 35mph on nothing but shoes with a thin strip of metal beneath them! And women in skin tight outfits.

Also, I really, really, really love speed skating. It's a Dutch thing.
