Many Mainers have put their hope for a more moderate leader into the hands of 6-term Congressman Mike Michaud. He's been leading the polls in what is shaping up to be another 3-way race with the same strong independent contender as a two-party spoiler.

In the paper this morning, Mike publicly announced he was gay. It wasn't really a surprise to most, but this is the first time he, himself, made this personal fact known to the Maineaverse.

In Sept. the governor race polls looked about like this: Mike Michaud ~ 40%, Incumbant Lepage ~ 34%, the Independent Cutler ~ 17% and the rest undecided.

How much impact do you think this morning's headline will have?

I'm not sure. Enough people hate LePage's guts that it might not make any difference.

I don't know Maine culture well enough to say but if you guys re-elect LePage, you're going to earn the mantle of dumbest state in the union.

Speaking of races I know little about, Barbara Buono is down 20-30 points to Chris Christie in the NJ gubernatorial race. I get that Christie is popular and was always the favorite to win but how bad of a candidate do you need to be to be trailing by around twenty-five points? I haven't been following the race but has Buono just not campaigned or does she step on ducklings during her speeches or is she advocating putting Jewish people in rail cars or what?

Having never heard of the guy, what did LePage do to deserve the hate?

Honestly, other than continuously spewing stupid crap out of his mouth, not much. He's a tea-party backed far right uneducated bully. The dems control both chambers of congress, so there's been lots of vetoing going on.

He has managed however to **** off the feds resulting in lost funding for education, he's reduced funding for all safety net programs, he's bullied our unions into hiding, he's put unqualified family members into positions of authority, he failed to expand medicare causing lost funding under the ACA, and most recently the wind-energy giant Statoil backed out of it's plan for an off-shore wind farm in our waters, citing Lepage's hostility as the main reason.

I believe his job approval is sub 40% which should be a death knell. But a three way race does funny things.

Of course, our governor has the approval rating of dead sod and might well get re-elected anyway depending on who gets through the GOP primary. Frankly, it's a little astounding that he won the last election.

It'll help Matty McT raise him more money. It probably doesn't matter in a statewide race otherwise, in a Maine 2 race it might have been ugly. 4 people in Presque Isle were surprised by the news.

They're dead. I've seen the lifeless corpses.

Supposedly the announcement was made now to head off speculation and/or accusations from opposing camps. If it also sways a net percent or two of the district 1 votes away from Cutler, that's cool.

So "Vote for me and I promise to keep the Volcano Gods appeased" was his campaign line?

I thought that was only valid in Hawaii.

Recanvassing votes in VA have given the Democratic candidate for Attorney General a slight lead over the Republican candidate (who was winning on election night). I think the lead is around 167 votes right now. Recounts tend to favor Democrats because (a) urban areas have more voters coming through and more chances for mishap and (b) low income & minority voters are more likely to get snagged by some "fraud prevention" measure and forced to cast provisional ballots that have to be manually calculated.
