A study come out today about breastmilk purchased online. Apparently much of it shows dangerously high levels of bacteria and/or levels of highly toxic bacteria like salmonella and e.coli.

Duh.

It's always good to have the proof, but come on. Who'd purchase human breast milk on the internets, and secondly, WHY?

It seems counter-intuitive to me. If one is so concerned about the health of their child that they want to feed it human breast milk versus formula, why would they take such a huge risk and purchase it from some stranger in a strange land over the internet. There are not even guarantees it's human milk.

Fems, how would you feel about selling your boob milk? Talk about being bovine.

I'm all about lactating moms helping out friends/families or even neighborly acquaintances that can't, for whatever reason, make their own breast milk. But a market for human breast milk seems like it's on that edge of ethical creepiness.

Duh.

You'd think trying to buy a couple baby toys/swing chairs/cribs/etc off Craigslist would convince you not to trust the cleanliness or purity of internet boob milk.

Willing to bet that much of it is sold to people with a special kind of interest in it.

Pretty much summed up my thoughts nicely.

The whole moms helping other moms and pumping for people you knew thing was weird enough, I can't imagine getting breast milk from someone you don't even know. You'd think there would be some kind of red flag there. Other people being icky and such.

It's not like they pasteurize it or anything. That process is the only thing that lets us store cow milk for more than a few days without it becoming dangerous.

I'm not surprised, and I wish the.... whatever agency is in charge of this kind of thing (FDA? it's food, by all accounts) would crack down on it.

More along the lines of sexual fetish. While I can see there are mothers that would be dumb enough to buy and give their kids breast milk bought over the internet I can see perverts being dumber and more wide spread.

for the love of all things I even double check that but for some reason it keeps posting two /quote

Haven't read anything about this, literally just found out this was a thing moments ago. I'm amazed that the issue isn't that it's mostly not human milk given the relative cost.

I'd say it's equally dangerous that we have people studying online breastmilk purchases.

People sell and buy it, it only makes sense to test if it's safe.

I don't know who 'we' encompasses but the study was published in the journal Pediatrics.

Why is testing breast milk being sold on an unregulated market dangerous?
