Linky.

I've not been a fan of Greenpeace for a long while now. Seeing them in action previously left a fairly bitter taste in my mouth, with actions I really could only describe as immature and childish. So part of me is glad to see the Russians stick it to them, I don't really have much sympathy. On the other hand it's not like they were ever really a threat to the oil thingy; more than a little bit of over-reaction there.

I'm still trying to figure out why Greenpeace did this in the first place, it's not like the Russians are known for their tolerance of fringe groups like this. I mean, for as harsh as it could end up being, it's not a wholly unexpected result.

Or do the Russians find a nice middle ground here?

Okay, that was dumb. Although the charges of piracy don't really seem to apply, they could nab them for trespassing.

Hoping to share a cell with those Pussy Riot girls?

Russia doesn't treat troublemakers well.

If you think that's harsh treatment, look into how they handle hostage negotiations.

I intend to see to it that any man who sails under a pirate flag Greenpeace or wears a pirate Greenpeace brand gets what he deserves – a short drop and a sudden stop

First they ignore you,
then they laugh at you,
then they fight you,
then they arrest you for piracy
then you are raped to death in a gulag.

Yeah, why protest against someone who'll put you in jail?

With Putin campaigning for the Nobel Peace Prize the Eco-pirates could get off easy.

They were sailing under the Dutch flag. It's kind of nice really, this year is "Netherlands/Russia year" to celebrate the connection between our countries and the Russians have so far jailed some Dutch protestors, kicked a documentary maker out of the country and banned him for life (a documentary for this event year even), denied a bunch of people from the Netherlands entry and some Dutch musicians who were supposed to play some concerts in Russia for this event year are not going because since one of them is gay they fear for his safety.

FRIENDSHIP!

Probably just a sideways French flag. Don't be so easily fooled!

Think of all the whales they could have saved in those 15 years they'll spend behind bars.

Rotting potatoes probably made a good Russian Navy deterrent when trying to hijack an oil platform.

Well yeah, and if that's really what you want in life you'd think you'd find a more productive way of getting locked up. I mean at least the ELF guys up here burned some logging equipment and such. Better memories looking back in your autumn years than getting 15 years for putting up a banner.

`We used to have an orange/white/blue flag but then WW2 happened and the collaborators used that flag a bit too much so the queen changed it.
