Do you live in an allergenic city?

#1 this year is Wichita, KS.

I grew up in Augusta, GA, ranked number 27 on there based on the amount of allergic prescriptions and use of OTC allergy medicine. I'll tell you why: It's not just the pollen or the number of physicians, it's all the friggin industries in the area. Federal Paperboard and Proctor & Gamble are the worst causes, but the dog food plant was particularly offensive some days.

I often joke that I was allergic to Augusta, and it seems I wasn't kidding. Since I moved away I stopped taking Claritin regularly and only really need to worry about my nose running during allergy season (like ragweed season right now. Bleah.)

I don't see my name in there anywhere.

Hey number 100/100, awesome.

Fall allergies aren't really a thing here. Late spring is pretty bad, people say things like "even if you don't have allergies when you move here, you'll have them after a couple of years." But things stop growing fairly early in the fall and the rain starts up, clearing the air.

#58 for Chicago but I'm out in the 'burbs so I don't think that translates well air quality-wise.

54/100, halfway to Albany. I've got either allergies or a cold for 9/12 months of the year, and I often can't tell them apart.

I've got cold symptoms, but that's more from last weekend's flu shot.

Since my move into the little house in the big woods, i've experience a bit of sinus discomfort whenever we have a non-winterized long dry spell. I assume it's pine pollen. It's pretty manageable with advil and/or submerging myself in water. For whatever reason baths and swimming and such seem to clean out the sinus passages remarkably well.

I read an interesting editorial today written by the mother of a child with lots of allergies. The article asked that schools not ban allergens (peanuts mostly) as the sterile environments didn't provide the exposure young immune systems needed. She also argued that the allergen ban provided false security to sensitive children as they move in and out of a real world which is not so sterile.

You can also infect yourself with (ringworm?) which will suppress an overactive immune system...

Given the rise in gun deaths recently, I'd assume lead allergies.

Hook worms, iirc. Ringworm is an annoying fungal infection similar to jock itch and athlete's foot and does nothing other than make you buy a can of Tinactin.

I was trying to come up with a gay marriage allergy joke, but you may be closer.

I don't see how Daytona Beach ranks so high. I live in an area that is nothing but allergies. Every couple of years we go on Vacation to Daytona and the time I am there I am allergy free.

It all depends on what you're allergic to.

The study is based on allergy meds sold. So, besides or regardless of actual allergens in an area population density is going to be a big factor as well as access to medical treatment and otc cold medicine.

So it's more a chart of methamphetamine manufacturing.

If ya'll live on the south east coast, don't come to Vancouver Canada because when I moved in the spring my nose was going off the wall. These pine trees will do a number.

Actually, pine pollen is too large to be the trigger of allergies. It gets everywhere and makes a mess, but it's not the cause of your sniffles. There's probably something else blooming at the same time that isn't as noticeable. Down here, oak pollen is the real culprit.

I guess one upside to growing up in the #27 allergy capital is that most other places are relatively calm for me, in comparison.

Here I was thinking there was nothing but Christmas trees and black bears up yonder. Smiley: glare

Balsam Fir smells specially nice.

There has been some logging going on in my neighborhood. It looks like crap, but the whole area smells really nice after a day of sawing and mangling of pine trees.

I got to tour the company's sawmill up in Montana and it was the most glorious smell ever. Loud, though. But very cool and very good smelling.
