It's all the media's fault for sensationalizing it and encouraging the copycats. If they'd just stop reporting gun crimes no one would feel the need to shoot anyone ever again.

To be fair, making the perps incredibly famous almost certainly has a negative impact. You could easily do this reporting without the "human interest" ******** "inside the mind of a killer" avalanche that's almost certainly coming. There are pathologies where mentally ill people crave recognition at all costs. The simplest path couldn't be any clearer.

Well...at least he wasn't' black and Muslim. Or from Syria....or Iran.

S'funny how all that money spent on security cameras, surveillance, personnel is less than useless at stopping this sort of event, but the fact that this shooting did happen will be used as a reason to extend security spending even further and people will feel that even more intrusive surveillance of their lives will be justified to 'make them safer'. So this won't count as a mass shooting where the "good guy with a gun" didn't stop the shooter, I'm sure. Not sure why yet, but I know it can't because that's impossible.

It's a case of the gun laws being so stringent that even the military and police can't carry.

Something about how lax hiring practices and security loopholes allowed a mentally unstable guy to too much bad stuff too fast for the hero guys to help. Obviously if those other people were doing their jobs better then there'd be no reason for everyone to carry a gun.

But since they aren't... Smiley: wink

Although regular office folk didn't carry guns, it's my understanding that they had armed security personnel on site. I'm guessing the shooter assumed all the armed guys would be off guarding schools because no one would ever attempt a mass shooting in a location where you know there's armed security.

Besides the cop, Washington Navy Yard is a military installation, so that whole "if only guns were more easily accessible' argument is going to be ridiculous no matter which way you swing at it. It is a pretty monumental failure of security procedures to be certain, but it wasn't because blind people don't have guns.

I know it seems counterintuitive but, most military bases are gun free zones. Most especially in the US. Soldiers don't usually walk around with sidearms.

They don't walk around, but I've never been to an installation anywhere that they weren't easily accessible. Which doesn't mean much when the gate guards are basically $8 an hour mall security.

Not difficult to get but except for people in training (at ranges), MPs, civilian contract security, and the other various security details out there (armory guards and stuff) it's not normal to be walking around armed. And even if you go check out your rifle from the armory to clean it, it isn't like you have a bunch of ammo.. Besides the armorers know when a range is scheduled. They aren't likely to let one person check out a rifle and walk off with it, out of the armory area. When I was in and paintball became a popular thing, they'd make you check in paintball guns at the armory and you'd have to check it out again to go use it.

Of course. That makes sense then, as we know there's NEVER been a "mass shooting" when there was an armed responder nearby. I assume "mass shooting" will now mean 20+ killed. The next NRA mailer will probably have a chart:

No of Dead Type of Event

1-5 Neighborhood Watch
6-10 Whoopsie Do
10-15 Unavoidable mistake that would have led to 75 dead if knives were used.
15-19 Source Awards
20+ Mass shooting.

No kidding. They take gun safety seriously in the military. They're not teachers, pilots, or someone shopping at the mall who needs to be armed at all times.

Now, I'm not sure if I've been misinformed, but this guy started with an easily obtainable, totally legal weapon (a shotgun). He then used the shotgun to upgrade to a police handgun by blowing away a cop and stealing his sidearm. He then proceeded to use that to kill a security guard armed with an AR-15, which he used for the rest of the assault. So, not only did this guy use a common hunting weapon initially, he was able to take down at least two armed and (presumably) trained people who's job it was to protect the facility. I guess the only question I have is how someone with a history of violent mental illness was able to buy a gun legally. (Thank you NRA)

Tell me again how more guns would have prevented this?

cite? Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the AR-15 a civilian version of a military assault rifle? Why would a security guard at a military facility be carrying a civilian firearm?

I would expect either typical police fare (standard issue handgun of some sort) or military grade equipment.

You answered your own question. Just because he's on a military site does not mean the civilian gets access to the military's gear. Most likely it was issued by the company the guard works for since they were able to get approval to arm their employees with such weapons by the facility Commander.

Just to note, there were three weapons found and none were an AR15. A shotgun and two handguns. My guess is that someone saw the barrel of the shotgun from a distance after the first shot or two and just jumped to that conclusion since that's the go-to weapon to panic about.
