A suburban Boston HS his cancelled it annual Powderpuff Football Game citing injuries, sexism and rivalry.

The game, in which the girls play touch football and the boys cheer, is quoted as being a 'time-honored' tradition. The students, for the most part, are not on-board with the decision to cancel.

So what do you think.......

Should a HS sanction this Event?
Yes, it's harmless fun and a time-honored tradition:10 (58.8%)
No, it's sexist, dangerous and encourages internal rivalry:0 (0.0%)
Yes, if the roles (players and cheerleaders) are made equally available to both genders :2 (11.8%)
American football is a farce:2 (11.8%)
Other:3 (17.6%)
Total:17

The Article
An interesting comment on the article.....

"The name 'powderpuff,' which most students still call the game, inadvertently serves to mock the hard-fought struggles of female athletes to be taken seriously and, we think, perpetuates negative stereotypes about femininity and female athletes,"

Here's the basic problem. You have a socially awkward but influential left wing female at the helm here. She has taken it upon herself to decide for others what is sexist and what isn't. This is typical liberal behavior

Sounds like football in a nutshell. I can't fathom how this was unexpected.

Sounds like that episode of King of the Hill. New woman shows up and gets the school to cancel the Powder Puff Football game because the men dressing up like cheerleaders was "offensive" to women and girls. In the end, Bobby and his friends dress up like cheerleaders anyway, and go. The woman complains, and they say that they are just expressing their desire to cross dress (playing the liberal against the liberal).

I've never had a problem with powder puff. In my school it was mostly the football team who dressed up like girls and played the cheerleaders. Beyond a small handful of people, most got a kick out of it. Those that didn't like it just didn't watch the game. The girls who were on the field playing the game enjoyed it, the crowd got a kick out of the guys pretending to be cheerleaders. A few expressed their disagreement with the men dressing up like ugly women with big fake tits, but they didn't try to stop them.

Edit:
How about a "yes" option that doesn't say "It's a time-honored tradition". How about it's just harmless fun that the students should be allowed to participate in or not participate in if they so desire.

It's "harmless" when the "funny" part is clearly divergent from socionormative behavior. "haha tough guys in dresses, and female athletes, crazy!" When that behavior becomes closer to current social norms, the "funny" part becomes offensive. A game where the white kids wore blackface and the black kids wore whiteface was probably a hoot in the 30s. Just kidding, there were not black kids, but still, I bet the blackface game was a really good time.

They could play Sharia-ball where the cheerleaders have to dress up in burqas and the girls get to throw stones at them.

I voted for making the roles available to both genders. That is, other guys should be allowed to play on the football team too, but they cannot be on the actual football team. So the chess team guys can play with the cheerleaders on the field. Or, for example, choir girls can join the football team on the cheerleader sidelines, but no actual cheerleaders can.

Basically, open it up to both genders and to anyone who doesn't normally get to participate in the football game at all.

I figured it was just a group therapy session for everyone who has to live with those kinds of people every day.

I didn't see anything in the (brief) article about boys wearing cheerleader outfits but if we're just talking a girls' touch football game with boys cheering then I fail to see any problem.

I'm open to Cat's idea. I mean, it's irrelevant as no chance in hell the chess team even shows up, since they have no idea where the football field even is.

Because that's what the cheerleaders want: touch football with the chess team.

the secret though is to nab them when they're still up and coming - like rock stars. If you don't nab them before they leave the garage, forget about it.

Speaking of nerds, Twitter filed an IPO yesterday.
