Been playing for a week already. Still not sure what to think of it yet. Its like WoW and FFXI had a baby. So far the crafting is the biggest improvement over any other MMO I've seen so far.

Odin - Kuwoobie Kisaragi

(We'll be moving to Goblin once they open server transfers to meet up with a friend there.)

Are you in the beta, Joph? And if so, how is it?

(Asking for clarification because you may be too cool for the cool kids, and such.)

Ultros - Turin Alexander

I decided to farm some Aldgoat skins for my Leatherworker and took my Archer to level it a bit at the same time. I dinged 14 on Archer, realized my gear was out of date and since I have the Carpenter skills to make my own bows, I then ended up farming the ingredients for some bronze ingots, and the logs and the branches to make HQ versions of the next two bows that I'll be using. I suppose I could have bought most of the ingredients, but it's easier to HQ a synth if you use HQ materials.

Ultros - Balick Degare

We have a TINFS linkshell going, if anyone feels like rolling an alt or something on Ultros. You can pst anyone in it - they're all set as leaders and can send invites.

Also note that FFXIV implemented two guild types. Linkshells are essentially chat groups, with Free Companies being the more traditional guilds. But you can be in up to 8 LSs at a time, which is really nice. It essentially means you don't need to lose contact with other players, just because you want to change guilds.

And crafting/gathering are really, really well done. Since they actually turned them into classes (Goldsmith, Miner, etc.), you get abilities that you can use to affect the item. It mostly revolves around this minigame where you buff your quality as high as you can in order to get higher chances for an HQ yield (and you get better experience the higher the quality gauge goes).

It's actually interesting to craft now. It's not just a game of finding out how many of <insert mats> you need to get the maximum possible skill-ups from <insert item> and then hitting the craft button while you go make a sandwich. The fact that the crafts can make practical items helps.

To be fair, Nephthys was the 11's toon name, Wanderers was the linkshell. But yes, much easier. I let the random name generator take this one, I'm tired of trying to think of new character names.

I mostly just have a handful of names I end up reusing. I never really played anything with Surnames before SWTOR. I ended up with Degare just because Diggory was taken.

Otherwise, I have a list of go-to first names for games, because I'm too obsessive to try and think of a unique one for each title. I'll dwell on it for way too long.

Balick is my character in FFXIV, and my Jedi Guardian in TOR. Wieland is the name of my retainer in FFXIV, my Warrior in GW2, and a character in Skyrim. Etc.

And when naming is an option, I always go with the default...

My names are often Obsidian (or some similar spelling),variations of Pearl/Purly/Peerii/Purely, the occasional Elinda, and in most games I make a knight type and name it Herbert after my Dad - but they never get beyond newb status.

My current MMO Character is an Lotro Warg named Purely Scrumptious.

I just re-submitted my beta request for ESO. I think they're discriminating against women - or old people. I might have to do an experiment.

Is this new FFXIV still in beta or is it now fully operational. I've never played an FF MMO.

LOTRO has Wargs? Since when are there forces of the enemy available for play?

Player versus Monster Player (PvMP). It's Lotro's pvp option. The Wargs (and Spiders Orcs and Uraks) are contained to the Ettenmoors. The regular characters, the hobbits, elves and dwarfs and such, once they're of high enough rank (and if they're on a VIP account) can come into the Moors and fight with the monsters.

Wargs are a pretty fun character to play.

I tried to get into LOTRO, but the micro-transaction stuff for bits of content bugged me.

I'm not opposed to F2P models that use those sorts of microtransactions, but that implementation bugged me.

I'm paying for a vip account - $15/month. It's just easier than buying the necessaries piecemeal. Also with vip account you don't get all the crappy advertising.

After yesterday, I can say it's fully operational. The patch and server fix worked really well after they made a minor tweak. The only issue is that they are locking/unlocking servers for character creation to try to fill servers as evenly as possible. Logged in the last two nights during prime time on a full server without so much as a hiccup.
