Bloomberg is going senile.
Bloomberg Wants to Protect Us From Sparkler-Wielding Terrorists wrote:
A recently passed bill to allow the sale of sparklers in New York wouldn't even apply in the five boroughs, but Mayor Bloomberg is still urging Governor Cuomo to veto it, arguing that terrorists could use the fireworks to make a bomb. The mayor's office pointed to failed Times Square bomber Faisal Shahzad, though he used fireworks containing gunpowder, which isn't found in sparklers. You can ponder whether the risks are worth it while making your annual pre-Fourth of July trek to Connecticut.
It's my constitutional right to celebrate the birth of our nation by setting fire to parts of it, damn it. Not that it really changes my plans, as we're heading to Pennsylvania to my parents' house in the middle of nowhere to cook dead animals and blow things up this weekend.

Your plans?

A couple years ago, my son was scandalized at the end of our Michigan vacation when I tossed some unused fireworks into my bag. He was certain that border agents in Illinois would find out and throw me in fireworks jail. I think I wound up just tossing them out rather than try to explain/justify breaking IL law to take them home. Damn kids.

No big 4th plans. I thought about taking the 5th off but then realized that no one else would be working anyway so coming in would practically be a vacation in of itself and without using a day.

Ditto.

Had plans to take the 5th off and potty train the youngest, but we're also planning on taking some time off to travel at the end of July. 13 hours in a car with a freshly trained individual seemed like it was asking for trouble, so we're putting that off for a few weeks. Plus we're getting our new instrument in here at work today, and I'm looking forward to poking at it some next week. Smiley: grin

I've made "bombs" from sparklers before, just crushing a bunch of them and gathering it all in on of those plastic eggs from inside the kinder surprise eggs. Gets you a nice 2 foot flame or something but not enough to really do much terrorizing.

Does that involve cutting out his tongue? I can go with that option since he seems to not like sugar. Smiley: tongue

I kind of miss when I was little, we'd go to my grandparents' house. Most of the men, some of the women, and all of the kids would walk over to the parade, while the family members who stayed back would cook. When the parade was over, we'd walk back and there'd be chowder, steamers, stuffies, clamcakes, hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken, you name it. Then we'd catch the fireworks at the AAA baseball stadium at night.

Now, nobody in the family really has anything, and all my cousins are grown and spread out. I've tried having a decent cookout in the past, but most of my friends all just kind of stay home now, too. It's not even that someone else is doing something more fun. Unless they are and I'm just not invited. Smiley: lol

So, I'll probably just drink a few beers and maybe go out for some clamcakes.

The 4th is also the first day of the North American Discworld Con, were I'll be helping my daughter take care of Special Needs. I plan to get my photo taken with Sir Terry, sometime over the weekend.

As for the 4th celebrations, I'll walk outside the Hotel and watch the fireworks with other con goers.

I dunno...

I was planning to go down to Boston for fireworks, but the weather is supposed to be crappy and my kid has to work part of the day...

Then also, I was going to take Friday off from work as I'd not be getting home til late Thursday, but now I don't feel like I can take Friday off, cuz I took yesterday off and I have a crap ton of work to get done.

Plus, I might just want to watch tv that night. I'm feeling kind of wishy-washy about the whole ordeal.

Overrated. Freeport's more fun. Also, while Boston is a lovely city, the reaction to traumatic events by the police force is usually overdone, I'd imagine it'll be a cluster@#%^ this year.

There's some kind of joke converting the "o" in foggy to an "a", but I can't find it. Assume I made it and it was mildly troubling while also being begrudgingly funny.

Hmm, up early or haven't slept. Let me consult the Samira-O-Predicticator. Up early!

Edit: Hmm, also, you're going to meet a stranger whose name starts with "L"!

I knew I was right about you and Shia LaBeouf entering into a limited partnership focused around making dreidels out of Louis L'Amour's bones. It's all coming together now...
