I was going to start a thread today about this and the Benghazi thing but the internet connection at work was flaky and down most of the day.

Anyway, not a good thing and it should be investigated. Hard to say more without more information on who was involved.

Yeah, I won't partisanly defend the IRS on this one. They were in the wrong. If you're blaming Obama, however, I will question how much the IRS was acting on its own, and how much was pressure from the White House. The IRS commissioner from Mar. 2008 - Nov. 2012 was Douglas Shulman; I know nothing about him. He was appointed by Bush.

I wasn't saying it's an good thing that was happening. Just that if Varus was still posting here it'd be an anti-Obama thread as of yesterday.

Yeah, but why bother? Obama saving some puppies from a burning building would be an anti-Obama thread...

Limbaugh's theory is that this is all a ploy to distract from Benghazi... take that for whatever it's worth.

I don't get to listen to Rush. None of the local radio stations carry him. And I can barely get NPR, and I'm right on the border between two different NPR affiliates who are on the same frequency. One day I was listening to an interview with the director or producer of that movie The Master, and was kind of interested in hearing about it. Turned the corner and suddenly I was listening to what I think was Milwaukee's public radio and they were playing some uninteresting music hour.

I've been seeing this and the whole Benghazi deal in the news constantly, and I can't seem to figure out what the problem is, exactly. They are calling "foul" and "scandal" on **** nobody cares about.

I feel like I am stating the obvious-- but why then are both of these issues the ONLY two things that come up under "Politics" in the news?

In the news today, a local man apparently raped a peacock to death. So, you know, after that IRS scandals start to sound like better reading.

It's come out that the information in the ABC news report that the GOP was suddenly SHOCKED! by was available to the GOP leadership and Intelligence committee members (both House & Senate) back in March. Of course, they're the ones who recently leaked the information to ABC so they could run a news story and give a pretext to the GOP suddenly being shocked.

ABC News wrote:
News of the Obama Administration’s role in the extensive editing of CIA talking points on Benghazi rocked the political world last week and prompted a demand from Speaker of the House John Boehner for the release of all related White House emails, but it should not have been a revelation to the Speaker.

The White House first briefed the House leadership on the talking point revisions on March 19. The briefing was given to the House Intelligence Committee, but the White House also invited Speaker Boehner and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi to attend or to send a senior staff member.

Boehner did not attend, but he did send staff, according to the Speaker’s office. Those attending the closed briefing were permitted to view the emails, but not to copy them.

The Speaker made no public reference to the emails — or the news of the State Department’s role in removing references to terror warnings in Benghazi — until the story became public last week.
Washington Post wrote:
The senior administration official also says there was a separate briefing by Litt on the Senate side that members of the Senate Intelligence Committee were invited to.

There are a dozen House Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee and seven Republican Senators on the Senate Intelligence Committee. The White House claims they were all invited to briefings on the talking point revisions delivered by Robert Litt of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. The White House didn’t say which Republicans attended and which didn’t. But obviously reporters might ask those dozen Republicans if they attended — or sent staff — and if so, why they didn’t sound the alarm about the revisions previously.

1) IRS people were bad and should feel bad. It'll be interesting/amusing to see how far up the chain they can trace this, and who is capable of covering their tracks before the investigation catches up with them.

Smiley: popcorn

2) Related, it's nice to see a Republican introducing an anti-discrimination bill.

3) Benghazi thing is silly. Who tries to cover their tracks like that in a 21st century world? Word gets out too quickly to play dumb anymore. I can buy political motivations to deflect blame. Yes there was a re-election coming, though I'm not convinced that calling it an attack really helps those red guys. Whatever people say though. It was quite an international embarrassment if nothing else. There's nothing like having Russia warn against causing instability in a region, then watch the predicted problems play out like that. I'll go with international posturing as much as anything on this one, it just came back to bite them on the home front. Wonder if it makes it a more difficult prospect to intervene in Syria.

4) People shouldn't rape peacocks, it isn't nice.

The IRS thing makes me sympathize with the Tea Partiers more than anything before. I mean, talk about proving their point that the IRS is an arbitrary, biased, and a vindictive establishment.

This combined with the fact that the IRS has just barely begun to look into online refund fraud that's been going on for almost an decade makes me want to go buy a pink gun and an ironic American flag shirt.

Turns out the Benghazi "talking points" leak was somewhat fabricated.

Jake Tapper at CNN wrote:
CNN has obtained an e-mail sent by a top aide to President Barack Obama about White House reaction to the deadly attack last September 11 on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, that apparently differs from how sources characterized it to two different media organizations.
[...]
Whoever provided those quotes seemingly invented the notion that Rhodes wanted the concerns of the State Department specifically addressed. While Nuland, particularly, had expressed a desire to remove mentions of specific terrorist groups and CIA warnings about the increasingly dangerous assignment, Rhodes put no emphasis at all in his e-mail on the State Department's concerns.

Previous reporting also misquoted Rhodes as saying the group would work through the talking points at the deputies meeting on Saturday, September 15, when the talking points to Congress were finalized. While the previously written subject line of the e-mail mentions talking points, Rhodes only addresses misinformation in a general sense.

So whoever leaked the inaccurate information earlier this month did so in a way that made it appear that the White House – specifically Rhodes – was more interested in the State Department’s concerns, and more focused on the talking points, than the e-mail actually stated.

In order of giving a shit:

(1) IRS. Deserves a full, independent investigation. Uncertain if anything actually illegal took place but it seems obviously enough "wrong" to warrant some serious inquiry.

(2) AP Phone Records. From what I heard (Joe Klein, Time) the DoJ received permission to collect the records, presumably from the FISA court (although I could be wrong) as part of their investigation in homeland security information leaks. If this is true, it's hard to argue that it was "wrong" since that's what the FISA court is for but it may warrant a review of how far we want those powers to extend.

#26gbaji, Posted: May 14 2013 at 4:27 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) It's not the GOP being shocked that's the issue though. It's the fact that they have to pile up such a ridiculous mountain of shocking things before the media will do more than play lip service to the story that's shocking. Of course the GOP knew in March. And they knew last fall. And they knew like 10 days after the attack (like any rational person did). The cover up on Benghazi has been staggering in its brazenness in the face of incredibly obvious information to the contrary of the talking points put out by the State Department and the White House.
