I've got a loaded pellet gun in a curio cabinet in my dining room. Used to use it to shoot at my far neighbors roaming dogs as they were tearing up my yard as a kid. I also have a container of 100 .22 bullets in the same cabinet, and a child-sized "chipmunk" .22 rifle sitting in my bedroom closet.

What points are we trying to make about leaving loaded guns in a room with unsupervised children and whether or not proper training courses would make that less likely to happen?

I dunno what the point is anymore.

But lets ask this question. Currently there are no age limitations on gun ownership or use. Should there be?

Consider - for the most part it's 16 to drive, 21 to drink alcohol. I think most states have age restrictions on recreational vehicles like snowmobiles and 4-wheelers - 13 is an age that comes to mind. I know I got a snowmobile license at 13 - I had to take a safety class to get it. My kids had to take a safety class to get a 4-wheeler license though I don't recall what the age was (these instances were both in MN).

Without doing much research, I'd think 13 is a good age to limit gun use to - with other restrictions of course. We need good regulations on guns, but i think we need an attitude adjustment just as much. Guns have become a symbol for freedom in this country - that's just plain scary.

I think every child should be tested for aptitude with a variety of medieval weapons at the age of 5, with specializations chosen at 10 based on proficiency and level of interest.

Any specific medieval, or can we choose between Eastern and Western weapons? Ranged and close combat options? Gunpowder? I'd like to know all my options.

I predict many girls will specialize in whips.

Short, since you know. Five year olds.

It was a .22. I had my first pellet gun at age 6, and my first .22 at age 9.

Maybe you just had shitty parents.

True, but irrelevant.

Did they repeal the Brady bill? I know it's just lolWiki, but Wikipedia says that persons under the age of 18(16 in Vermont) are ineligible to own firearms under the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act.

Then again, there's no mention of age on the page for the act. I do know that we were prohibited from selling firearms and ammunition to people under 18(21 for pistols) when I worked at Kmart back in high school.

Which is funny for instances where the pistol and rifle ammunition is the same. I remember guying .22 rounds and being asked that. Though I thought I was under 18 and could buy .22 rounds for my rifle... maybe I am remembering wrong, or maybe laws have changed... or maybe it's store policy driven?

Who's to say the parents don't claim ownership of the gun, though? That they bought it for their child doesn't necessitate child ownership.

I'm not saying they didn't. Just commenting on the call for age limitations since I thought we already had some.

I suspect states have various regulation on ages. I don't think the feds do. I could be wrong.

I am wrong...

Right. Learn the concepts of handling and shooting with an airgun, then move on to firearms.
