Boston marathon 2013

Seems that two bombs went off near the finish line of the Boston Marathon today: http://www.wcvb.com/news/local/metro/Explosions-reported-near-Boston-Marathon-finish-line/-/11971628/19757044/-/ktnc1wz/-/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

Quote:
wo explosions have been reported near the Boston Marathon finish line on Boylston Street as thousands of people gathered for the race, and there are reports of injuries.

The blasts happened at about 2:50 p.m. near the intersection of Boylston and Exeter streets. Store fronts have been blown out, and there have been reports of dozens of injuries.

Images: Boston Marathon explosions

Witnesses said several victims lost limbs, the race was stopped and the area is being evacuated.

The first explosion happened across from the Lenox Hotel and the second blast was about 15 seconds later, witnesses said.

Many of the injured appeared to be spectators who gathered for the 117th running of the race.

NewsCenter 5's Sean Kelly said the impact of the explosions could be felt blocks away.

The victims were being taken to Massachusetts General Hospital.

Saw a graphic photo of it that The Atlantic linked. Lots of blood, some lost shoes (limbs?), people on the ground getting treated. Looked terrifying.

And after a frantic series of frantic text messages everyone is fine. Lil' bro finished 83rd, so Smiley: thumbsup for him. They had already left the finish area before stuff blew up.

I'm hearing that it was two separate blasts, and considering the location, it seems doubtful that it was an accident.

I've also seen some unconfirmed reports of police finding tertiary undetonated devices, and that they were telling people to stay away from trashcans. Guess we'll see.

EDIT: They're blowing one up in a controlled detonation now, apparently.

Seeing twitter light up like a Christmas tree. Sounds deliberate, and there are various reports that other devices were found unexploded:

FOX reported 3 dead so far.

That's pretty ****** up. I was planning on running the New York Marathon in November, and I'd hate to think this was a test run. Kind of a selfish look on the events and such I know, but it is what it is.

It's hard to stop listening to the EMS feed:

I just heard they're checking out a possible third explosion, but that it may be unrelated and due to an electrical issue.

My two Boston friends have both checked in. They're safe but spooked.

I had just finished homework when I walked in to tell my husband I was good for us to go to the gym.... he had Something Awful up, where a thread had already started, and was like "THIS JUST HAPPENED" - I didn't comprehend the graphic photos at first, because there's always colorful crap on the ground after people finish races (they get powder tossed on them in some races...) Only after the reports of injuries and lost limbs came in did I realize that was blood, not powder.

Going to have nightmares tonight. Smiley: frown

That is a very large explosion for a device in a garbage can. It has to be either militery grade, or a large pile of commercial grade blasting agent. Either way is troubling. That and the multiple targets. Major intel failure here for certain if no one got wind of something that big going down. Sounds like they got at least one device fairly intact for forensic analasys, and they appear to have a suspect, though at this point who knows.

Hope everyone here and all they know are safe.

Mmm... Yea heard about that on the news this evening.

I type records for a hospital up there, and I've already started to see a few ER notes show up on this.

Without revealing anything protected, I will say that one person had a large number BBs picked out of them. BBs aren't just laying about, usually, so I would say this thing was definantly set up to spray shrapnel.

Thoughts with the victims and I hope they catch the slimeball who did it.

Jesus thats crazy sh*t. I was at work and was following it on my phone. I am kinda ****** off though. Since this has happened no mention at all of 3 Iraqi cities and over a half dozen bombs were hit today to. (55 dead over 200 injured)

I also almost died on the way to work today, luckily my car pool driver has good skills...(some people should seriously not drive aka asian women).

But ya some seriously messed up sh*t. But kinda expect mass killings every few months these days from 3rd world USA.

Stay strong Boston, thoughts and prayers to the families and friends of those wounded, maimed, killed, or distraught. Iraqis don't let the fear from today stop you from voting this weak, your voice is your weapon.

Apparently the devices were loaded with ball bearings... So they were designed to tear people apart. so what Shador is saying has been confirmed by mainstream media at this point.

I am thinking the detonations were premature, and they had intended to do them all when the bulk of runners were there, which, last year, was after minutes after when they actually detonated them.

No I always say what I want to say. I'm sorry, I feel bad for Boston it was a tragic event. But my TV just talks about Boston major news sites just talk about Boston. What about 3 Three city bombing in Iraq, that killed 55 and over 200 injured. An equally malicious act buried by most western media (I did find an article on BBC god bless the English).

But seriously your country is out of control, mass shootings, now bombings, every few months.

Let me ask you what freedoms will you sacrifice for this?

Planes hit towers.
PATRIOT ACT
TSA
NDAA 2012

I mean the underwear bomb, now you guys gotta get groped or use a full body scanner to use a plane.

Guy kills 25 people with an assault weapon....nothing.

So no you kindly go **** yourself. I am sad by Boston, I am sad by the bombings in Iraq, I am sad for your country. But honestly your guys **** is totally ****** up these days, and ya you're looking pretty 3rd world.

I thought what rdmcandie posted was fine. It doesn't belittle the Boston bombing to point out that this happens in Iraq like literally every day. It just gives perspective. Like pointing out how many gun deaths there have been in the US since Sandy Hook. Splashy events are compelling, but it's also good to get perspective on how mundane violent deaths occur so frequently that we basically ignore them, and what we can do to prevent those "mundane" deaths.

Local & National news outlets tend to cover the most important news items related to those in the locality, and/or nation, of their audience. Faulting news agencies for covering the Boston bombings over the Iraqi bombings is only an issue for you because you're a dick. I expect security to be tightened around the city, the huge national guard presence right outside my hotel being proof of that. Other than that, what can you do to prevent shit like this? Not a whole lot, unfortunately. Anyone can make a pipe bomb and detonate it in a populated area anytime they want. Limiting access to bomb making materials is pretty much the only response that might make a difference.

Calling us a 3rd world country? Also you being a dick. If anything, these bombings make us more compassionate towards the Iraqi, Pakistani, & Afghani people who deal with this on a daily basis.

Mass shooting have nothing to do with this, unless the perpetrator turns out to be a gun nut like the ******* who's first question to the Governor was asking if this was a false flag event.

I didn't call you third world I said you are looking third world. Every few month some mass murder takes place. Now you have bombs going off in the streets, and really the only reason I brought up Iraq was for comparison. As someone above mentioned, this happens all the time Iraq, but I didn't mention that for that comparison. I mentioned it because every few months you guys seem to be having a crazy show up and kill a bunch of folk. Kinda similar eh.

Military base shootings, Theater shootings, school shootings, bombs going off.

Yet you do nothing about the guns, and for the bombs you just take more personal rights away.

Ya you look pretty 3rd world right now.

(oh and if anything this is just going to increase the amount of anti-arab, anti-muslim rhetoric in your country regardless if a while christian was responsible or not, they will just suspect home grown islamic terrorism. Whether or not it is true is redundant....that is your country now.)

Ya you did, prick. It's not what you say, it's how you say it. Without tone & inflection, it's hard to take that any other way even if you didn't mean it that way.

You literally pulled an Alma there. It wasn't dickish, its just confusing when you say you brought it up for comparison but then you didn't.

We're doing something about guns, even if its totally going to be watered down in the Senate. After Oklahoma City the World Trade Center Bombings, we took away the right to buy the materials used in those bombs as easily as they were prior. I agree that the Patriot act was a bit much after 9/11, but we also had a less "even-keeled" President at the time & a congress that wrote him blank checks. I expect security to be tightened for large gatherings after this, other than that, I can't predict what'll happen.

I don't doubt it, even if I don't think it's right. You think Canadians would behave differently in the same situation though? Fear overrides logic pretty much every time. It doesn't make it right, it makes us human. Upside is, like Patton Oswalt elegantly stated, "when you spot violence, or bigotry, or intolerance or fear or just garden-variety misogyny, hatred or ignorance, just look it in the eye and think, The good outnumber you, and we always will."

If anything, that was proven in Boston today.

They had bomb dogs at the start and finish line, a cop every 10 feet. How much tighter can the security be? After so many of these events happening with the same pattern the conspiracy theorists are almost starting to make sense.
