I love this news story so much.
Madison.com wrote:
Kool-Aid is unveiling a new look for its big red mascot Monday, as the powdered drink brand looks to refresh its image and tout a new liquid mix.

The Kool-Aid Man, known for busting through walls and his "Oh yeah!" tagline, will now be computer-generated and take on the personality of a celebrity trying to show he's just a normal guy. In past ads, the character was played by an actor in foam costume and had little to say or do besides crashing through a wall with a big, smiley face.
[...]
Erica Rendall, senior brand manager at Kraft Foods Group Inc., says the new ads are intended to fill in the blanks in Kool-Aid Man's character so people can relate to him.

"He said a few things here and there (in the past), but he really didn't have a developed personality," she said.

Because somewhere in the world there was a guy saying "But what of Kool-Aid Man's other life, beyond the crushed walls? What are his hopes? What are his inner demons? What lies behind the painted glass smile? Can I buy Kool-Aid without knowing these things?"

Also that image of him looks unholy. Like he's barely being held together by some unstable process and the look on his face reflects his tortured knowledge that his time is limited.

Now I'm going to have to re-write the Kool-Aid man's back story. Sigh.

This sounds like an advertisement campaign they spent too much time thinking and talking about.

I'm really not. Endless meetings with clients who all have to have an opinion on everything because they're the boss and that's what they do, throwing around things like "make it more hip" and "it needs to POP more" and similarly vague and meaningless statements. Meanwhile you're slowly whittled down until you're little more than a tool in the hands of an idiot with no idea of design, what looks good or how to reach the right audience.

I feel sorry for you then because clients like that drain my will to live.
Luckily there are more clients who actually listen to what the designer has to say here and you can actually make something good looking.

I work in communications, not design, but the bullsh*t is similar. Except people ask me questions about policies/spending money on this or that and I find creative ways for them to not commit to anything.

I'd rather write press releases talking about the kool aid man's backstory. Sounds less stressful.

I'd rather not work for Kool Aid to begin with, looks like too much design by committee. I like living in the Netherlands, people seem to have quite a lot of respect for designers here.

I work in commercial production and I can tell you that every single ad agency "creative" is spending his entire day trying to justify his salary.

I also cringe every time I have to use the title "creative director" in a per pro book. When it comes to commercial scripts, I have more taste in my penis.

I am a graphic designer, although I may soon beworking as one of those ad agency creatives (although not one very high up in the hierarchy). I'm guessing they'd love to give you something brilliant to work with but they're busy getting anally violated by a client they can't afford to say no to.

I have long asserted that television commercials are the Art Form without a Soul.

ETA To hear some of these self important pricks speak, they seem to think that their words ar on par with Shakespeare, their images on par with Michaelanglo and their ideas on par with the wheel, fire, and sliced bread all rolled into one.

In other words: They have drank their own Kool Aid
