The Hermit was apprehended just in time for Human Interest Wednesday.

This guy has been living in a make-shift camp in the Maine woods for 27 years. He's been living off other peeps for the most part, burglarizing camps and cabins. This is a story from 2005 about the Hermit. He's been rather successful - probably because he's not been greedy.

Last week the Hermit was captured. He looks like an Asylumite doesn't he?

Christopher Knight went into the central Maine wilderness 27 years ago. He built a hut on a slope in the woods, where he spent his days reading books and meditating.

There he lived: re-entering civilization only to steal supplies from camps under the cover of darkness. During those nearly three decades, he spoke just once to another person — until he was arrested during a burglary last week

I don't really like talking to people much, but man I think I'd have gone pretty nutty having no conversation at all with other humans.

Edit - Oops - here is the breaking story of his capture.

I got pretty nutty not being able to take a real shower for like two months in Iraq.

If you can just swim in a lake instead it wouldn't be so bad. Except for winter.

That's actually a pretty interesting article. He never made a fire, and camouflaged his camp from both ground and air searchers. He was caught because one warden made it his personal mission to apprehend the legendary hermit, and set up an alarm system in a camp dining hall that he reasoned must, at some point, be burglarized again. Sure enough, a month later it was, and the silent alarm alerted the warden who showed up in the middle of the night and arrested him as he left the hall.

Yeah, a ****** game warden couldn't find a camp "strewn with bottle caps and batteries" for 20 years. I think you underestimate how hard he looked or overestimate how good he was at it.

It's sad as it seems the Hermit had no people (family, friends, etc) to notice that he went missing nearly three decades ago.

I think not
Quote:
Knight went to great lengths to make the camp invisible from the ground and the air, even covering a yellow shovel with a black bag. Knight never had a fire, even on the coldest days, for fear of being detected. He covered shiny surfaces, like his metal trash cans, with moss and dirt and painted green a clear plastic sheet over his tent.

Hughes, who spent eight years in the U.S. Marines and 18 years with the warden service finding and tracking experienced woodsmen, marveled at Knight's meticulousness.

Knight, who led Hughes and Perkins-Vance to his campsite, carefully avoided snow, stepped on rocks when he could and even avoided breaking branches in thick growth. Knight usually put on weight in the fall so he would have to eat less in the winter and thus avoid making treks for food and risk leaving prints in the snow.

"Every step was calculated," Hughes said.

Seems like he was pretty thorough.

Right, because the warden who was responsible for him for 20 years and didn't notice him said he was "wicked good at hidin". Ringing endorsement of his woodcraft.

ETA: Hopefully this will make an SNL Maine Justice. Nothing's better than watching those sketches with Nexa saying "I don't understand this!" over and over.

Bill Pullman portrayed a Maine Warden in Lake Placid - he was smart and didn't even attempt the accent.

I'm guessing the whole thing will be seen on a North Woods Law episode by next month.

I was slightly more impressed until I read that he stole all of his food and didn't hunt or even fish.

Seriously? WTF were you doing for twenty years, squatting under a tarp in the cold?

Well the article said he watched a mushroom grow for 4 years. I'm sure that ate up his time quite a bit.

I'm picturing someone doing that, but softly humming the original Mario theme.

Shame this was not in the UK, we would reward him with land

And I'm with Jophiel on the entire stealing food thing. That really shows a lack of imagination by the OP's Hermit.

He said that fishing was "too much work" for him to do. No sympathy from me. I just hope he doesn't end up on public assistance when he gets out of jail.
