To coincide with back to school, pushed by the Potato Lobby, or Big Spud as we refer to them. I was trying to think of something no special interests cared about, but that's harder than it seems.

Typically they put the letter into an excel file as a issue tally mark when it's reelection time. So, while your singular letter is worth very little, it can be useful for marketing purposes.

If no one with money cares, yes. If you're very concerned about when they declare National Potato Day, you can really have a lot of influence.

There is a rough calculus where money is compared to voter opinion. If 10M gives a +2% gain when supporting an issue would give a +/- .1% swing, money wins. If its the opposite, it doesnt. I assume you know this and are commenting on the skewed valuation caused by issue aggregation in our political system.

Actually, I've received personalized responses from my Representatives before. Saying that your voice isn't and never will be heard is a cop out to do nothing. A squeaky wheel will get oiled. You just have to be resilient and persistent.

The reason nobody gets heard is because everyone quits after the first obstruction.

With their stellar performances in Best Korea, I'd think we would have already put to use our amazing negotiating team of Bubba Clinton and Dennis Rodman.

I sent an e-mail to mine once and got a phone call from him a few days later. Was quite shocked.

Yeah, that happened to me too actually. We didn't end up agreeing, but I was certainly impressed.

Smiley: nod My rep is NDP, so I think it's pretty clear we didn't agree either, but the fact that he took the time to call was most impressive.

No, the reason is that the voice of the individual isn't very important. I agree that it's far easier to throw ones hands up and shout "if only people cared more" as the reason tiny interest groups are still catered to almost exclusively by legislators, but really it's the money. Sorry. The problem with US democracy isn't apathy, it's that structurally it's intentionally designed to reward wealthy groups or individuals. This hardly makes it unique, of course, but really unless you advocate for an issue that almost no one cares about the best thing you can do is GIVE MONEY to a group that has professional lobbyists. Don't do your own dentistry, and don't try to interact directly with your elected representative.

I was out for lunch yesterday with some co-workers and our US congresscritter Mike Michaud was at the restaurant sitting by himself eating lunch. I really wanted to invite him over to join us, but was voted down by the other two at my table.

I get letters about congresscritters and their positions on defense related matters like the abysmal state of the VA and their undying support and their appreciation of what we do and such. I figure it's easier than examining the actual issues.

Back during the health care debate, I called my Congresscritter and left a note of encouragement for her to vote in favor. After that, I was invited to several telephonic "Town Hall" events although none ever fit my schedule.

Contacting either of my senators has always just gotten me a form letter (e-mail) a couple weeks later. Usually one only tangentially connected to whatever I said when I contacted them. Obviously senators have a lot more people to attend to than House reps (unless you live in a one district state).

He probably just got back from Ottowa. I will submit that some of my comments apply to Reps who live in populated areas and have constituents who are mostly not moose.

ETA: Nice guy, I hear, though. Nexa's met him. Does have the shortcoming of having been born in Maine, which usually doesn't take you far in Maine politics.

#40Palpitus1, Posted: Apr 18 2013 at 3:32 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Sure. Also find your Representative and ask they continue to place pressure on the United States to release a hundred or so innocent humans from Gitmo. Who have also been abused. If you give a **** about consistency, of course.
