I made a thingy!
Screenshot

Specifically I rebuilt my long suffering desk. New laminate tops, new veneer on the wood surfaces, new upper cabinets, new shelves. also added a triple monitor stand and a heavy duty single monitor stand which will eventually support a larger monitor. Its mostly done now except for the new "above the monitor bridge element that will get built next week. Anyways, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

edit: here's a before picture

I made fancy food and drank fancy beer. Reaffirming once again that I would never ever want to work in a kitchen no matter how much I enjoy cooking up a fancy meal.

I drove into the city early Saturday morning, for over eight hours of overtime work. On Sunday I pissed off my wife something fierce.

I mean awesome...awesomeEQmaps.

The blocky (but full-color!) zone-connecting Travelers Map of Norrath is forever etched into my brain.

I planted seeds this weekend - tomatoes, peppers, egg plant and spinach. In an attempt to up my seed-to-plant production this year I installed a couple shop lights onto my plant shelf. The old technique of shoving the freshly sprouted seed plants up against the glass of the sliding door to try and catch enough light for them to flourish would yield me maybe two plants (but they'd be strong plants!) out of many sprouts. Next weekend I should have sproutlings to bathe under my new florescent lights - tubular!.

Also, I helped my husband install a desk onto the wall of the spare room that is getting renovated. Afterwards we decided it's much easier to move a desk around a room if it isn't mounted to the wall. Ah well, for now it looks good and works well.

I watched Finian's Rainbow. Smiley: inlove Things are well in Glocka Morra.

Gj on the cool thingy Kao.

I went to see That One Guy. He always puts on a good live performance and Friday's show was no exception. During the encore someone shouted "John Denver" instead of Freebird, and he just sort of went with it and sang Country Road to the tune of Weasel Pot Pie. It was kind of amazing.

It's the Iowa firing a full broadside. Same firing exercise, different angle:

Ooo, Mission Control Centre! Kaolian, your desk is clean and prepared to go.
You'll love your plant dedicated light Elinda! First you plant the babies, then you grow the babies, then you eat your babies! I read four books in bed, in between listing over my computer desk. Cold Magic by Kate Elliot was the best of them, the alt world was much much more detailed in its world building than most fantasy books. Finished off with skype that was wonderful for not having voiped for ages with some special friends

I did graduate school homework, wrote the first chapter of a new story, and drank a lot of Guinness.

Pretty standard weekend for me, although the Guinness is more normally a local craft beer.

That new desk looks pretty sweet.

I read The Rowan this weekend. I'm sure I've read others from this McCaffrey series, though many many years ago. The story was a more lovey-dovey than I had anticipated.

It's still amazes me that with all that firepower those ships are functionally obsolete. So much boom.

Anyway the wife was sick, so I played mom all weekend while she hid in the bedroom ignoring all the crashing and screaming. On the plus side it gave me more time to shop for new outfits in TERA. Smiley: grin

Specifically I rebuilt my long suffering desk

I like the end result. That said, I can't imagine restoring an industrialist desk like that. Wouldn't it be cheaper to just buy a new one? I mean if we were talking a belle epoch chinoiserie, sure. Very possible I'm missing something, I know nothing about furniture like that offhand.

Looks like a bit of custom work there. If he just got another desk he'd have to do the custom work all over again. And, well, Kao likes doing craftsman-y type stuff himself.

The problem with getting a new one was finding something that large, with a layout I like, that is solid enough to support servers and whatnot that get worked on occasionally and has a decent cable path layout. Cost wasn't the issue, it was more finding something comparable. I looked at many, many desks before I decided to just rebuild it. It's a really, really large desk. I like the way my desk layout works, it's pretty much ideal for my needs. Getting into something similar in size, most of my options are either going to be full on cubicle furnature, which is generally going to have the cubicle walls to contend with, something all up custom, which would be about the same cost, or trying to adapt something piecemeil. I did consider going with a fully built in, braced off the wall unit, but in the end I decided I like the ability to move the desk if I need to.

Plus if I were going with something new I still would have added the custom features like the side slide keyboard tray so I can shove the secondary keyboard over for someone else to use, monitor mount arms, the main keyboard tray itself (almost no one makes a 30" wide keyboard tray in an undermount slide out configuration that is worth anything).

That and getting large things home can be problematic, since delivery to ridgefield is hit or miss. And this way I don't have to get rid of the old desk. Ignoring the cabinits ($240), which I would have put in either way, and the monitor mount arms($200 for both), which I would have bought either way for a new desk or the existing one, the whole project ran me about $350, $100 of which was the laminate trim router. $50 of that was the keyboard tray, then $150 for the 2 laminate sheets, $30 worth of veneer, the rest was glue stain and fastners. A similar sized new desk started at around $500 for a cheap one.

Per the other thread, I played Minecraft. Too much of it. My home now features a 256-block tall falling lava tower, lava moat, pumpkin and wheat farm, and a "chicken pit" that rivals fast food farm conditions (a 10x10 stone pit in which I'm holding about 100 chickens).

I, too, have fallen back into the Minecraft tarp. And I cannot find a "keep your items upon death" mod and its pissing me off. Anyone know a mod that does that?

It's actually just a built-in console command. You have to be an op on the server. Which you can do by (1) downloading the "Minecraft Server" file from the official site, (2) running it to create your own server hosted on your computer, (3) "/op charactername" to give your self op status, (4) "/gamerule keepInventory true"

At least, that's how I did it.
