Quote:
In a statement, the pontiff said: "After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry.

"I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering.

"However, in today's world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognise my incapacity to adequately fulfil the ministry entrusted to me.

"For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is."

article.

Hopefully we'll get someone more progressive in his place.

In all seriousness though I wasn't aware that Popes were allowed to resign. If they were why the **** did they let the Pole go on for as long as he did not even knowing his own fucking name?

They can resign, it's just that nobody did since 1400something. Ratzinger supposedly already asked to resign before he was elected as pope but John Paul wouldn't let him.
He also was one of the people doing all the pope's work when the last one was hardly more than a zombie so he might've realised that that's not exactly the way to go.

Edit: And I said more progressive, which isn't too much of a stretch. Smiley: wink

Yeah suppose not. Kind of weird though. Why even accept the position if you wanted to resign previously?

Popestakes!

Disappointing that he didn't die. We'll miss all the talk of hitting him in the head with a tiny hammer. I have to research the candidates now so I can effectively handicap my pope betting.

If I recall correctly, they took a **** long time electing him because they couldn't really find a suitable candidate so saying no would've been rather much of a **** move.

I think he said at the start that he'd resign if he couldn't handle it anymore healthwise so they've had 7 years to prepare this time.

Not a chance in any real sense. They don't pick someone who isn't a company man for these positions.

As for retirement, the Pope is the supreme head of the Church, period. If he decides he's going to retire, there's no veto power to stop him from doing so. If he decides he's not going to retire, there's no mechanism for removing him.

Which goes right back to my first statement -- they don't pick someone who they're not 100% sure is going to stay the course.

How about a black guy first?

At least I read that some Nigerian guy is amongst the candidates you can bet on to become the next pope. Don't know if he's actually black or not.

If that was true, wouldn't the one that resigned in 1294 or so have been the second to last one? Or any of the other handful of popes who have resigned.

IIRC, it's not the pope resigning that's the issue, it's that Benedict was the second-to-last pope named in the prophecy. The next one is "Peter the Roman," who will see the end of the Catholic Church. Something like that. The crazies were hoping that Benedict would last for a good long time, because they don't want to see the end of the Church.

Well, "amid many tribulations" is dead on. Whoever takes over is gonna have to deal with the mess of the pedo priest scandal, reconciling the archaic views of birth and contraception with the modern day realities of an overpopulated world and disease, and the mass exodus of church members to Protestant sects that are more liberal, to agnosticism, atheism, and general who-cares-about-it-ism from the cradle Catholics.

Silly cat, that's not how these prophecies work! You'd think that when Jesus wasn't named Emmanuel folks might have scratched their heads and gone "Huh, guess he doesn't fulfill that prophecy." Oh wait, nope. They just give it to him as a title instead of a name and, voila! Insta-prophecy!

Same thing happened with Benedict; his line was something about an olive branch, and then his papal symbol had an olive branch in it. It's like the people who hold the prophecy and make the symbols are playing in the same rigged game or something! Smiley: lol

I only looked because I remembered the other misuses in recent threads, most notably the Ron Paul one. It just stood out because I don't typically see many people use "whom" at all. It would seem that most people will use "who" when "whom" should be used, but the opposite would appear to be more rare in occurrence.

I think I understand the misunderstanding around Papal Infallibility (basically there are a ton of conditions that need to be met, and the last Infallible Edict was like in 1950 or something?), but what's misunderstood by Immaculate Conception? This is coming from a former Catholic, I always knew it as "Mary was untouched by even Original Sin, and remained sinless up through giving birth to Jesus, so only she was a proper vessel for Christ to come into world."

Is that right? I always understood it as a ham-fisted way of saying, even if some other virgin gave birth to a child (like Julius Caesar, who was said to be a virgin birth as well), only Mary alone was ever free of sin and thus able to birth the Messiah.

The common misconception about the Immaculate Conception is that it refers to the virgin pregnancy of Mary and not to her own sinless state at the time she conceived. Or, more properly, Mary's own conception/birth without the taint of original sin.

"So you're pregnant even though you told me you broke up with Johnny? What was this, the Immaculate Conception?!"

Hey Smash. Is there a "Rollover" on the papal dead pool?

It's always been a safe bet to stick with a pontif, although if they go for the young-ish Aff'kuhn dude, might be worth switching back to Anthony Hopkins, despite his pickled liver keeping him semi-embalmed.

What's up with God picking this guy to be the pope? Shouldn't he have picked someone who could make it the whole way? It almost makes you believe that it's just human beings picking the Popes, and not God.
