So yeah, the decision to allow same sex marriage has been approved by a vote in Parliament this evening.

The Commons voted in favour of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill, by 400 to 175, a majority of 225, at the end of a full day's debate on the bill.

Prime Minister David Cameron has described the move as "an important step forward" that strengthens society.

About 140 Conservative MPs are thought to have voted against the plans.

Yay and such.

I especially like this bit:

I don't know about your side of the pond, but on this side Conservative became synonymous with biggot\racist\misogynist at some point. It's good to see some folks looking at their positions and really redefining the word to be less about having an opinion on peoples' personal choices or their color or their gender, and more about working on policies that benefit economics the most. Our guys could take a lesson from this.

That's somewhat true. The conservative party is neoliberal in a way the democrats aren't. Obviously they preside over a more developed state with e.g. an NHS, but their austere economic policy is to the right of everyone. Also, extremely stupid.

Oh, and yeah obviously we all knew this'd pass but nice to have it over with. I wonder if it'll pay off for Cameron, given how the vote serves to remind everyone of the feelings of the party at large.

Oh definitely no argument from me there. I'm not sure how this will play out, I have a feeling it won't go down well for those MPs when it comes to local election time.

Also that "Bedroom tax" thing is going to bite them in the ***** Very soon, I'd imagine.

Oh dear god. Not only is this a mean way to recoup a petty amount of money for the government that could be a make or break amount for a person/family on the edge; If my sister and I had to share a bedroom past the ages of 6 and 3 one or the other would have literally killed the other one. Our mother wouldn't have ameliorated our relationship to prevent it.

#21gbaji, Posted: Feb 11 2013 at 6:58 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I'm find it interesting when people are surprised by political systems they support using the exact same ideological approaches they support, just in ways they didn't think about when giving that support. You kinda can't support government deciding what people "need" when it comes to taxes and then wonder why they might decide what people "need" in terms of housing (or food, medicine, education, etc). Well, you can, but it would be foolish to do so. Unintended consequence, I told you so, whatever.

The sad thing about this is that it's even news. Gay marriage being legal should have as much emotional resonance as talking to your friend at the bus stop being legal.

You're right, if you vote in Torries, they harm the poor. QED. Glad to see you come around, comrade.

No. It works for whatever majority it needs to get into and stay in power. If that majority decides that the poor only need to live in shacks with 5 people to a room, that's what it'll do. You're naive if you think it'll always or even most of the time do what you individually want it to.

Sure. However, this isn't America. This sort of thing doesn't really stand here, especially not after the media get wind of it.
