I'll be training my replacement probably in the next few months. My boss isn't bad by any means (he deliberately tries not to be "that guy"), but he sometimes makes off color comments that someone with an uptight disposition might find offensive. (Most of us just shrug or groan at the bad jokes, although sometimes he cracks a joke that has us all falling off our chairs laughing.)

But that's actually part of the interview process at our office. Are you offended by bad jokes? Do you get freaked out if someone hands you a gift for doing a particularly heroic job at something? Do you find donut runs demeaning? (Everyone has to do the donut runs at some point.) Do you get upset by profanity - because this is IT, there will be profanity involved? Are you weirded out by people doing shots on the job (because we will be doing shots if we had a bad day)?

75% of the people we interview blink at some of those questions. The rest who shrug and go "whatever" are probably the ones that'll get called back in for tryouts, and eventually hired.

Quit my job Nov 2010 and trained my replacement. I was honest and said boss gets high strung having to run two terminals just to take it in stride and be able to answer whatever pertinent or stupid question is asked. My boss, I returned to FL and got rehired over the phone a week before I arrived in FL, said he lasted about 5 months and left.

We are to be hiring someone to work as driver and dockman. Boss is having me train him to do my job and dock work and our senior driver training him for that. I will tell this guy my boss gets stupid seeing as we are short on drivers and competent night shift. Hopefully we get the okay for this so I do not have to work six, sometimes seven, days a week.

I would tell them, "Judy is very particular about how this is done, so ask questions if you're not clear about any part of the process." Wherever applicable and in as many variations as it takes.

The problem is that my boss will tell me to do something, I'll get clarification on what she wants, then once it's done, she'll berate me for doing it and ask why it was done in the first place. When I tell her, "But you asked me to do it that way," her response is usually either "you must have misunderstood me" or "I just expected something different."

She had me make 30 copies of a document for a board meeting, then when I presented her with the copies, she looked at me like I'd grown a second head and asked me, "Why in the world would the board ever need to see this?" I told her she asked me to do it, and she pretended not to hear me, and continued to ask me why I would do that for a meeting. This pleasant exchange took place in front of her twin 12-year-olds.

I have no idea how to warn a new employee about these issues without just simply telling them, "She's crazy, don't take it personally."

Honestly, though, this lady first told me to take only names and phone numbers when answering the phone. Then she got mad when there were no phone messages, so she literally sat down and made me write out a list of instructions to answer the phone. A month later, she chastised me for talking to donors on the phone and told me "names and numbers only." I don't think it's just me.
