Ash, isn't it your job to keep us up on what Glenn Beck is doing these days?

Dallas Observer wrote:
Earlier this week, Glenn Beck announced that he was reinventing The Blaze, his online media property, as a global libertarian news network, complete with three foreign bureaus, a nightly news magazine, and, no doubt, lots of Beck himself.

Last night, he announced the next stage of his full-bodied embrace of libertarianism, which seems to be a massive commune inspired by "Galt's Gulch," Ayn Rand's utopian community in Atlas Shrugged.

Quote:
On his program last night, Beck revealed that his intention to "go Galt" is quite literal, unveiling grandiose plans to create an entirely self-sustaining community called Independence Park that will provide its own food and energy, produce television and film content, host research and development, serve as a marketplace for products and ideas, while also housing a theme park and serving as a residential community.

At the center -- in the middle of the lake that is itself larger than all of Disney Land - Beck (with the help of David Barton) will create a massive "national archive"/learning center where people can send their children to be "deprogrammed" and elected officials can come to learn "the truth."

This is actually even stupider than the people who wanted to build pseudo-Rapture out at sea since you could at least then pretend you were going to be free of government interference. This would just be some Libertarian theme park under the same umbrella of state and federal government as the gas station down the road. Not that I imagine it'd ever happen but I guess it's always fun to watch idiots waste money.

Oh, it's harmless level crazy. I was worried he was going to start one of those far more feasible desert compounds, molest some kids and get shot resisting arrest.

I image it'll end about as well as that lovely village under the sea in Bioshock.

In related news, a new Captain Underpants book came out today; Captain Underpants and the Revolting Revenge of the Radioactive Robo-Boxers.

Mother Jones says, "Glenn Beck's Fake City is a Sign of Tea Party Irrelevance". Smiley: grin

I'd only argue that I never found the Tea Party terrible relevant despite their success in snagging a couple of congressional chairs.

I assume he'll first tear out all existing infrastructure - roads, water pipes, power lines, etc. And of course, we'll be able to just sneak into his commune and steal whatever we can find, without police interference. Sounds good to me.

Relevent comic is relevent.

The problem with Going Galt is that someone still has to do all those pesky chores, like cleaning and farming, and none of the Job Creators (tm) are willing to do that sort of menial labor.

I'd rather just sit right outside with a cold beer and enjoy the ensuing chaos.

I've worked too har ... well, I've worked my way out of manual labor to have any desire to go back into that particular work force, though I have no problem with setting up camp just outside with a telescope. Also a pretty good alternative to prom nights.

Shouldn't take long; a theme park with no safety oversight sounds like a great idea.

Add loads of people wanting to be leader and few to none who want to do the grunt work and it's a guaranteed disaster. I'm sure it'll make for great TV.

Eh, they won't have a problem with that, they'll just hire from the current large pool of unemployed laborers, same as any big project. Nobody said the workforce had to be philosophically in-line with the movement. What will be entertaining is when the immigrant status of their employees is revealed.

For a half moment, I thought "Sure, if I was a laborer I'd want to work for a guy who doesn't believe in labor laws, minimum wage, etc"

Then the absurdity of this whole thing came roaring back: Beck's Libertarian Paradise is still bound by US and Texas labor and wage laws.

They should offer to buy Sealand.

Then they can make all their own laws!

Edit: This was the best comment by far.

Please tell me that's sarcasm. It has to be sarcasm. It can't be real, right?

I'm seriously leaning toward sarcasm, but truth is often stranger than fiction.

1. It could have been paraphrased.
2. I am bad at picking up on that kind of cue, especially when I've seen **** that's just as crazy be genuine.

Well, obviously. I mean everyone knows that any sort of attempt at civilization without embracing at the warm teat of existing tax funded infrastructure can't work. These are Job Creators, Joph, they understand this sort of thing.
