DeMint US Senator from South Carolina just announced he'd be stepping down from his senatorial duties to go head up the Heritage Foundation. SC Gov. Nikki Haley is responsible for naming a replacement senator.
Do you think someone like Haley has any autonomy in naming a replacement, or would DeMint have demanded to name his own successor before agreeing to give up his senatorial seat?

It's not as though he's leaving as part of a plea bargain or scandal. So I don't see the leverage in demanding anything before you'll agree to leave. But he's influential and his hand-picked successor will likely get the spot.

I don't get this. Why not hold a sort of..by-election? Isn't it kind of the opposite of democracy to be able to hand-pick one's successor? This is something I don't get about US politics. Explain?

They will, but often times (like in this case) someone gets appointed to fill the position until that can happen. I want to say laws vary a bit from state to state, but having someone like a governor appoint a temporary replacement isn't unheard of.
The "hand-picked" thing would be more of a "behind closed doors" deal.

States make the laws about electing senators. Mostly these are all the same with the exception of the statues around replacing one. Some appoint, others have special elections in various timeframes. Frequently Governors have a great deal of power over the processes. I hear it's ******* golden.

Ah, yes, that would make sense. I realize though that it isn't unheard of, but you'd think that there might be changes to the way it's done after the scandal where the Governor of Illinois was more or less trying to auction off Obama's senate seat to the highest bidder.

As nice as it would be to modernize the change itself is scary. The political calculus with our current system is way to well understood by the parties that would be involved. The prolonged redistricting battles that happen every 10 years are bad enough already without trying to change other rules.
But it'd be nice if we could manage to hold a "special election" faster and make this temporary replacement thing less of a big deal.
