I'm sure the GOP will be all over themselves to admit a state full of Spanish speaking brown folk.

According to the numbers I'm reading:
47% voted for status quo
53% voted for a change
• of those 53%: 65% want statehood, 31% want sovereign free association, 4% want independence.

So really, only 34.45% of the population wants statehood. If I'm reading it correctly.

Yeah, it's a long haul scenario. Honestly, I don't think anything will happen this time around. This vote was non-binding, really more about gauging interest than anything else.

It'll mean they more openly and seriously discuss the topic, but I'd be surprised if they applied for statehood in the next decade. The biggest motivator right now is the economy, because their unemployment rate is SK high. But that's also a huge barrier for them being accepted by us, and will be less of a motivator as the economy recovers.

Is there such a thing as a binding resolution on the matter (coming from PR)? They can't exactly claim statehood or independence unilaterally.

Well in theory they'll need to be a binding resolution on whether or not to seek statehood, no?

I suppose. Obviously it wouldn't do to have the PR government seek statehood against the wishes of the mass population. I'm just hearing people make more of this than it deserves. Even if PR was going to hike to Washington tomorrow and ask for statehood, I seriously doubt it would happen.

Oh I agree, if PR seriously wants statehood, they're probably going to have a lot of work ahead of them to make it happen.

I also happen to suspect that the chances of them ever being accepted are next to nothing unless they can prove that there's strong public sentiment in favor of it. So even if the government could seek statehood without a popular vote (and I honestly have no clue if they can, by PR or US law), I can't help but feel like it would be very heavily in their favor to have one.

I'm all for a 51st state. That'll make the flags I had flown in Iraq and Afghanistan that much more collector's items and valuable in the future.

We could accomplish the same by kicking Alabama out of the union.

I don't think it'll happen so long as that places a communist nation between two states.

Hey, Florida's getting better. We voted down amendments restricting a woman's right to privacy, denied tax payer money to religious institutions, voted out Allen West, and voted for Obama. I guess technically those last two are still pending, but... there are so many other states to get rid of first!

Listening now, and it's pretty bizarre. I skipped in a little ways...the guy in the video at the 11:00 mark sounds like a cult leader. As I listen now, he's prophesying that Obama's master plan is to destroy the suburbs.
