The Republican party needs to do some soul searching. I find some of the comments this morning very odd indeed. "We lost because we were to moderate", "Romney wasn't conservative enough". Only 1 comment on 3 news sites that Ive read today on the real issue, "the Republican party is out of touch with America."
In all honesty this party is going backwards at a shocking pace. Their policies, their positions, their people. I would not at all be surprised when the house flips in a couple years, and with another Dem President taking the helm in 2016. Until the Republican party gets off the train to crazy town anyway. At this rate Ron Paul looks more and more sane every day.
I'm not sure about out of touch, but there's definitely groups in the party, well any party really, that make it unpalatable to others. Christian right, environmentalists, etc. etc.
I kind of saw this election as the pendulum swinging back to the center a little. 2008 swept the Democrats into power in a big way, but they we're father left than the average person, so 2 years later you get the tea party and a lot of Republican upsets. Now in 2012 we're deciding that's not really the answer either, and moving back closer to the middle. Briefly at least, before someone gives it a push in another direction.
Romney as a moderate is fine, but goodness yes certainly you have to silence the crazies a bit. It doesn't do either party any good to have their fringe dictating policy to that degree.
