I was wrong about who would win the election. I stand by patiently to await the board's decision on what my sig should include.

As to the import of what this election means, it'll be very interesting to see what lessons Obama takes from the results and does with them.

On a sidenote, how many electoral votes did Obama get 4 years ago? Looks like he's heading for 332 now.

Edit: Oh, meant to post this in the other thread. Ah well, works here too.

I'm curious as to how much people will weight this as an Obama win versus a GOP loss. I think it was a winnable election for a GOP candidate, but they picked the wrong one and then ran a poor campaign with him.

I thought this, also, but it very likely is inaccurate. The Obama GOTV machine was the real thing, not just lucky the first time. Romney didn't run a perfect campaign, but the demographics are not good for the GOP for Presidential elections. If dark skinned fellows turn out the Democrats win the next ten elections unless the GOP moderates it's positions on immigration and other issues. You can't be the party of old white guys and win in places like Colorado and Virginia and Ohio anymore. That's not going to get better anytime soon. Unless we start deporting anchor babies. Seriously though, immigration is slowly killing the GOP, I can see why they are such quivering whine holes about it.

According to Shawn Trendy (sp?) from RCP on the radio this morning, white voter turn-out was way down this election. Minorities didn't vote in significantly greater raw numbers, but they made up a larger percentage because the white voter base Romney was relying on stayed home.

I thought I heard somewhere last night that this is the first time a candidate got 60% of the white male vote (Romney) & lost the election.

It's funny, when we went and early voted last week, I saw maybe 50 other people there. 90% of them were paired up (as in couples, mostly white and older), there were two people there aiding two different blind people (the school for the blind is nearby), and then a few duets of ladies with a child in tow (these 6 people were black.) I think there was 1 or 2 single black men there as well. But really, predominately, it was couples. Older, white couples. It was hard for me to imagine these men voting Romney with their wives in tow, or even the two of them showing up early to vote for opposing candidates. Eh, regardless, it's over, I'm glad I didn't waste too much anxiety on it. Gobama.

Just curious, what do you base the economic prediction on, Joph? I foresee some tough times early on, especially as the EU figures out what the hell to do with their problems; but given the cyclical nature of economic swings, and the positive progress that's being (slowly) made, I agree that the economy in 4 years will be better than now. You thinking the same way, or have some other insight?

No, much the same. We're on an upward slope and things are cyclical. Many indicators are up and, while I'm not predicting boom times in the near future, I think our trajectory is a positive one.

I'm not making any hard predictions here and I guess the government can manage to dork it up but I expect the scene to be a lot brighter in 2016 than it is now and Democrats to run on that progress.

The Republican party needs to do some soul searching. I find some of the comments this morning very odd indeed. "We lost because we were to moderate", "Romney wasn't conservative enough". Only 1 comment on 3 news sites that Ive read today on the real issue, "the Republican party is out of touch with America."

In all honesty this party is going backwards at a shocking pace. Their policies, their positions, their people. I would not at all be surprised when the house flips in a couple years, and with another Dem President taking the helm in 2016. Until the Republican party gets off the train to crazy town anyway. At this rate Ron Paul looks more and more sane every day.

I'm not sure about out of touch, but there's definitely groups in the party, well any party really, that make it unpalatable to others. Christian right, environmentalists, etc. etc.

I kind of saw this election as the pendulum swinging back to the center a little. 2008 swept the Democrats into power in a big way, but they we're father left than the average person, so 2 years later you get the tea party and a lot of Republican upsets. Now in 2012 we're deciding that's not really the answer either, and moving back closer to the middle. Briefly at least, before someone gives it a push in another direction. Smiley: rolleyes

Romney as a moderate is fine, but goodness yes certainly you have to silence the crazies a bit. It doesn't do either party any good to have their fringe dictating policy to that degree.

I, and mathematics, disagree. The current trajectory is to mirror Europe's failing austerity policy, Obama shows no signs of moving away from that meaningfully. Bernake seems to be starting to get it, but he's about out of things he can do other than dropping $100 bills from airplanes over populated areas. The *current* trajectory stalls in about 18 months without additional stimulus support. Maybe that'll happen, but I wouldn't count on it. I'd expect the GOP to fairly trivially pick up the Senate in 14. Obviously that's a LONG time from now and predicting virtually anything more than a few days ahead of time is established to be functionally impossible, but it's still fun to think about.

I don't know if the right people even thought of him as moderate. You have conservatives who think he was too moderate and moderates who think he was too conservative. The lead up narrative kept talking about "independents" going for Romney but a lot of them were Tea Party defections from the GOP who call themselves independent. The actual ideological "moderate" vote broke heavily for Obama (56-41 per CNN).

Maybe that Etch-A-Sketch proved more resilient to shaking than Team Romney thought.

One of the pundits last night said that when young people (18-29) vote the same way in 3 consecutive elections, which they now have, they end up voting that way for life. And so that generation is lost to the GOP forever.

I have no idea how much truth there is to that, but it made the other pundits get all flustered and deny it.

I think so.

Something along the lines of the rhetoric moving too far to the right during the primaries; because of that there was no real way to get back to the center in time for the general election. Or maybe just the overall exposure to the more conservative dialog during the primaries was a put off. We did have to listen to months of it, and a lot of it was stuff a moderate wouldn't care for. I know the collective memory doesn't run very far into the past, but yeah, perhaps a bit too much for a bit too long?
