East-coasters, batten down the hatches, Frankenstorm is coming.



Will anyone be taking out-of-the-ordinary precautions in preparation for this storm?

We'll pick up an extra can of gas for the generator, but that's about it.

We're going to be out in the middle of a cemetery, ready to kill them as soon as they rise.

No, Frankenstein was a scientist.

Storm path for this one looks weird. Seems like it's kinda hooking out back into the Atlantic, then swinging west specifically to wipe Delaware off the face of existence. My NJ -> NYC commute on Monday should be....err....interesting.

Frankenstein is a Frankenstein.

Does a Frahnkensteen hold as much beer as a Frankenstein? These are the critical questions for our age.

I'm scheduled to drive up into/through the Catskills on Monday for work. Last year, I was supposed to go to another Catskill town after Irene blew through, but that storm pretty much destroyed the town and all access to it. So this may be rather interesting for me...

Finally, someone provides an easy-to-understand, unbiased answer to the question.

You obviously need to hang around a better class of revenants.

In a perfect world, all recombinant revenants would roam free, unmolested by bigots and able to fulfill their highest destinies. Alas, we live in a world of shotguns and angry mobs, unaccountably armed with pitchforks even in cities.

You have to admire the way people keep the old traditions alive, even in the face of impracticable levels of adversity.



If Fallout New Vegas taught me anything, it's that shotguns are completely useless against everything.

Shotguns were useful for up close head shots. You could reliably take off a head if your Guns skill was reasonably high. Anything farther than about fifteen feet out though, and you'd be better of throwing the gun than shooting it.

Wiki article says they can be visible ghosts or animated corpses. Because this debate also got me lost in wiki articles, it seems the primary difference between a large variety of monsters is their behavior and their origin.

Zombies generally refer to largely mindless, anonymous creatures--in most pop culture, zombies don't have personal connections to their targets.

Revenants, on the other hand, seem to rise specifically to target those who they were close with in life (though that's a later addition to the folklore).

Draugr (Norse for "ghost) are, ironically, animated corpses. But the concept is that they guard their own graves from robbers, as Norse burial send them into the afterlife with a great deal of wealth. Draugr would, on occasion, leave their crypts at night to attack the living (almost always leading to horrific killings), but it seems this was usually out of revenge or jealousy. But it doesn't necessarily say this is personal, like with the Revenant, but rather suggests that all Draugr end up loathing the living. They share the feature of an insatiable appetite (perhaps a symbol of their desire for life) with modern zombies.

There are WAY more, of course. Because many, many (if not most, or even all) cultures have legends of the dead returning. I just chose these because they are the ones I see most frequently in media.

We told our biggest client over the summer they needed a diesel generator capable of at least 8 hours installed, because they have several hundred thousand dollars of IT equipment at this point, and last time they had a bad power outage it almost completely wrecked their brand new VMware cluster.

Generator was installed earlier this month. Although our impact from this storm is unlikely to be more than a lot of rain, we're prepared!

We lost power about ten last night. It was still out when I came into work this morning. I didn't get to shower. I feel dirty.

Didn't lose power at all, which is strange because hour house is all Swiss Family Robinson-style in the woods and we usually do lose it in any large storm.

Glad you guys got off light. We lost power around 7 PM yesterday and are still out, but we were entertained with the soothing melody of every transformer in a 2 mile radius nearly exploding at the same time.

Thankfully, my power stayed on the whole time. Whew!

Maybe you should let a few hookers slide past; you know, stress relief for the overworked staff.

I only stop the hookers that are idiots. Ya know, the ones that aren't discreet, or solicit in the bar, or don't know the @#%^ing NAME of the person they're here to see, or if they've setup shop in the hotel for incalls. Or if I suspect they're hookers taking in calls & I can find their picture on backpages.com or they're "accepting appointments in Boston" on their personal porn star website. All of which I've done at one point or another.

They usually don't even know their first names, if they even speak english. I found one wandering a floor once searching for a room we didn't have & no name once and was nice enough about getting her to leave & she broke down, slumped to the floor, & started wailing in Mandarin.

Another time, the girl couldn't get in without a key after hours, so she buzzed the intercom but didn't know the name on the room, so we couldn't let her in. Her madam called, I transferred her to the guest's room, & I guess he changed his mind so he called down & refused further calls. She called back, I informed her he refused her call (you can't dial direct to rooms without going through me), & she didn't take no for an answer.

She must of been a telemarketer on the side, as she proceeded to call bomb the hotel, tying up all of the lines going in, & literally frying our telephone system, which of course set of the fire alarm.

Good times.

We never lost power, but our furnace just quit out. Probably ran out of fuel.

I was a whore in my youth. Paid well, but the benefits sucked.
