I'd say I was amazed that they could spend 20 posts arguing about how to make a grilled cheese sandwich, but then I remembered where I am. Smiley: nod

Oh. And if you're following Smash's advice, the sun dried tomato wheat thins topped with bacon infused cheeze-wiz is pretty darn amazing!

I'll just say that throughout childhood and even now I will take two pieces of bread, a slice of cheese, and nuke it for 30-40 seconds til the cheese is melted.

It's not a grilled cheese sandwich, but I always liked the texture and flavor. Sometimes I'd take the results and roll it into a ball and have a little dense doughy cheesy melted thing.

I am truly appalled at the lack of grilled cheese knowledge in this thread. You people should be aSHAMED.

No sandwich of mine will EVER be in a microwave!

Smiley: motz

Butter the bread, put it in the skillet, put two slices of cheese on the bread, place the other slice of bread on top, flip maybe two-three times, voila - you're done. And it maybe takes 10 seconds more than the microwaved crap you heathens eat.

Who microwaves grilled cheese? Honestly.

On the topic, the local pub here serves Grilled Cheese Burger. Essentially a burger made up of 2 grilled cheese sandwhiches as its bun. ******* awesome.

I microwaved cheese on toast. 15 seconds preserves the toast while softening the cheese. It's not grilled cheese, but it's quick and easy.

If you insist on microwaving the bread, at least put a paper towel under it to prevent it from being soggy.

Toaster oven does both without soggying the bread.

There is something to be said for multi-flipping meat. You often get a more evenly done piece of meat. With thicker cuts, such as roasts, this effect is often simulated with a dual cook method preparation, usually searing then finishing in the oven.

Once is enough if you like medium rare. for an average cut of steak grill 7 minutes, flip ones, grill for 7 more minutes and done.

Typically your piece of beef on the grill, whether it be burger or steak, should only be flipped one time. The more you flip it the dryer it'll get.

I have an electric griddle that gets to live on the counter. Makes grilled cheesers a breeze. I like my grilled cheese sandwich pure with no adds - only garnished with a little mound of ketchup on the side.

I've never heard of a toasted cheese sandwich - what's up with that?

I will often put some sliced cheese a piece of toast with some kind of tart jam. But that's not a sandwich just a piece of toast.

My toaster died this morning. It's been sick for awhile so this wasn't unexpected. Still, it sucked.

Not everyone has a grill, I guess? Have you really never seen a toastie maker? It's what most cafés use.

I make my grilled cheese sandwiches on a Forman. Three minutes from assembly to dinner. Though I still cook my tomato soup on the stove. And I mean real tomato soup that I grew, juiced, and canned myself. None of that store bought from concentrate crap that never has enough acidity in it.

My grilled cheese sandwiches are only made using stone-ground grain grown and prepared by a sect of Celtic monks devoted to Cerridwen. The cheese is prepared by a trio of Vestal virgins who maintain a single pure white cow gifted to them by Faustitas. After the cheese is ready, it is laid upon the bread in a three day ritual before an eleven-toed eunuch carries it to the earth-forge guarded by Tiamat. Luckily, he does not have to get too close as the waves of primordial heat toast the bread nicely and give the cheese just the right consistency.

Then the eunuch stops at the store on the way back to pick up a can of Campbell's tomato soup and pop it in the microwave for me.

If using bread that is anything better than wonderbread crap, I recommend you cook the grilled cheese in your pan/griddle and then stick it in the oven on broil for about two minutes, flip and repeat. It gives the bread a wonderful crunch and golden color. It also works a lot better with clarified butter. It's super easy to make your own and you can melt a little bit and use a sauce brush to spread it on the slices of bread.

I recommend a combination of gouda, muenster, and gruyere. Very thinly sliced tomato adds a ridiculous amount of character to the sanguich.

Sourdough is best imo.

For the best possible grilled cheese sandwich: quickly fry up some beef mince, add sambal to the mince and put all that between two layers of cheese on the sandwich, then grill however you want it.

Ryan has to campaign in Virginia. I mean, Wisconsin has gone blue the last several cycles but by razor thin margins in 2000 and 2004. But who would have guessed that a red state like Virginia would potentially be lost to the GOP two cycles in a row?
