No worries, Obamacare covers it.

Grand slam by Obama, I think. If he can coin a few more zingers like this, he'll really revitalize the base in the couple of weeks leading up to the election.

I noticed that. I attribute it to his speech being more personal and off the cuff. You could tell at one point he was really amusing himself up there.

Take that, Canada.

Oh, just a moment: "Leave it to the liberal media to latch onto a liberal buzzword like it actually meant anything and is nothing but an attempt of the left to subtly mock the right. I mean, God. No scruples at all."

Good for a chuckle but I hope they've got more than that for the home stretch.

Ohio is still looking good for the Democrats. Huge lead in early voting there and the polls have been more resistant than in the other swing states, probably because the campaign worked hard early to ingrain a lot of negative sentiment towards Romney. Nevada still has a good Obama lead and his large lead with Hispanics will help.

Provided Obama can hold WI, PA & MI, those plus OH and NV are 271 (assuming all the obvious blue states). That's losing CO, IA, VA, FL, NH and whatever I'm forgetting. Not that all those should be neglected but keep the eyes on the prize and stay focused, Obama.

This will be a big help the next time Obama reads ZAM.com

I feel so sorry for our president. In the last debate particularly, he sometimes just had this look on his face that said, "Man, am I really wasting my time talking about this ******** to this goon?" Keep fighting the good fight, Mr. Obama.
#14Palpitus1, Posted: Oct 21 2012 at 6:40 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I feel sorry for our president because he sometimes has this look on his face like, "am I prosecuting marijuana producer despite saying I wouldn't? Am I assassinating American citizens? Am I immunizing former Bush and banking despots and IP carriers from illegality while prosecuting those who whisteblowed on them? Am I suspending habeas corpus when I see fit? Am I reauthorizing the AUMF to inclde much more than "those involved in 9/11? Am I judging any military-age persons as combatants when I drone-bomb then?

Speaking of marijuana, one of the first medicinal marijuana cases is going up to the Supreme Court pretty soon. The scientific evidence is overwhelmingly in their favor that pot should not be a schedule I drug, and I hope the lawyers hammer it home hard that criminalizing all forms of hemp is hurting America economically for no good reason.

The president's job is to enforce the law, not to write it. The justice department's job is to interpret and verify the law, not to enforce it. Obama has said that on many of the projects he originally hoped to tackle, he'd now rather that the law be taken care of by the other two branches of government, lest he overstep his authority. Marijuana enforcement falls pretty firmly into that camp.

Until the government and corporate markets can actually control supply, distribution, and profiting of Marijuana or related plants (such as hemp) it will never be taken off the scheduled drugs lists. It remains illegal because there is no controllable market for it.

Nonsense. The government could tax it and go after illegal producers on tax or regulatory grounds for failure to meet standards, buy stamps, etc. If marijuana was legal (as in for standard use, not medical yadda-yadda) you would see packs of marijuana cigarettes by Philip Morris and RJ Reynolds in every gas station and convenience store, sold at mass production prices and with a standardized quality of product. If you don't think that's what sells in a mass market, you need to get out more. Consider it the difference between McDonalds, Burger King & Wendy's versus every independent place that makes a better burger. Now consider it if the government actively went after the independent places. Or, more aptly, consider the difference between major brewing companies and independents. Anyone can ferment grain and hops in their basement, becoming a legally licensed brewing operation and competing against Anheuser-Busch is another story. And I guarantee you that the major tobacco companies have a lab-tested supply of marijuana seeds ready to put into the ground the second it's legal.

Marijuana is illegal because public perception (esp. among people who actually vote) on a national stage is still that it should be illegal. Cities can get away with decriminalizing small amounts and states or municipalities can get away with medical exemptions but, wide-spread, the public sentiment just isn't there yet and running on a pro-marijuana platform is to be running on a pro-losing-the-election platform. Ironically, part of why public perception is against it is probably because people picture Mexican drug runners with semi trailers full of bundles of pot running untouched through the streets rather than the reality -- those drug runners will be out of a job when Philip Morris has a government licensed and sanctioned semi full of marijuana cigarettes on the same road.

The "Justice Department" is not the judicial branch. The Justice Department (one of the arms of the Executive branch) is the top tier of law enforcement in the nation.
Justice Department's mission statement wrote:
To enforce the law and defend the interests of the United States according to the law; to ensure public safety against threats foreign and domestic; to provide federal leadership in preventing and controlling crime; to seek just punishment for those guilty of unlawful behavior; and to ensure fair and impartial administration of justice for all Americans.

This.

Though, I'd be happy to grow it myself, which I think is probably the sentiment amongst most marijuana smokers, which I think is part of the problem. It's hard pandering to hippies because they don't spend money.

We watched Forks Over Knives with BT's mom last night, and talked about this same thing. Veganism won't be a viable alternative for society because there's no money in people being vegan. When someone is perfectly capable of growing everything to eat in their own backyard, or all the medicine that they could pretty much ever need, two great big forces of our economy get taken out. The amount of effort and energy corporations and the government spend propping up these two forces can't be countered by a bunch of stoned people trying to grow vegetables in their garden while trying to live in harmony with the giant spider who keeps watch over the pests.

Also, I realize that the phrase "marijuana cigarettes" makes me sound like someone out of Dragnet but I can't imagine anyone will be buying a commercially produced pack of joints with little twisty tips and and all that.

I've seen the ones the government actually produces (there is a man in Iowa who was grandfathered in to a government program a couple decades ago, and Uncle Sam sends him 300 marijuana cigarettes a month for medication) and they're machine rolled. So basically like manufactured cigarettes without the filter. The twisted ends are a product of hand-rolling.

The fact of the matter is, if marijuana becomes legal, the means of consumption expand. People who have access to medicinal marijuana rarely just smoke it - they eat it, they drink it, and I've also seen they have a mouth spray that just coats your cheeks with THC so it's insta-absorbed there. I'd love to have a little THC bakery and make cookies and brownies and **** so old ladies and children can enjoy the benefits of THC like everyone else.

(I say that sort of facetiously, but I once saw on TV a little boy who had autism whose mother fed him a little bit of a THC cookie in the morning for his "medicine", and he was a completely different and manageable child who could function in a classroom with a teacher and other children. If this is the case, it should be an option.)

Right, like tomatoes. You're a fucking idiot. The tin foil hat issue isn't that anyone can grow it, it's that it would be cheaper than prozac, so "the man" keeps it illegal to prop up big Pharma.
