Coke is introducing a new line of beauty drinks. LINK

Is this the answer to Red Bull for girls, or is it just bull?

I wonder how it compares to milk?

Earlier this year, Coca-Cola in France introduced Sprite with stevia, a natural sweetener that has no calories - pictured the Stevia Rebaudiana plant

Stevia kind of weirds me out. It's popping up in just about everything now (in fact, I'm drinking something with Truvia in it right now). But there doesn't seem to be much in the way of information on it; the only research that I've found has been funded directly by stevia producers.

Looking forward to finding out about the cancer risk in 8-10 years.

Everything I've read said the plant itself is harmless. Like with all things, it's the refining and manufacturing process that adds the health risks.

I can't stand stevia. It tastes like dirt to me.

Splenda, on the other hand.... Well, if it causes cancer, it's been a delicious decade for me.

It's got a pretty bitter aftertaste that I don't think anybody really enjoys. But it's palatable enough for the 0 calories, IMO.

Everyone remember Olestra? Yeah, not looking forward to Coke's 2.0 (not literal) version.

Hopefully it'll be before the Feline AIDs really gets up and running.

I don't know anything about stevia really, if I need to sweeten something I prefer raw sugar, but the cancer does come from Splenda, and the other chemical sugars, Catwho. I'd readily say try the stevia instead since it's plant derived and not made in a laboratory, The reason it tastes like dirt to you is because your tastebuds are so overstimulated by the maltodextrin that anything with organic levels of sweetness taste bland.

But, to each their own way to die of cancer. I can be back on my high horse though because I quit smoking again. Smiley: schooled

I think that's the correct response to anything that's being marketed as a "beauty drink".

Mind citing a source on the outrageous Splenda claim? Sucralose has been considered safe for 20 years because it is, and there has never been a clear link made between sucralose, or to the extent of my knowledge any artificial sweetener, and cancer.

Of course, the information is contradictory to said outrageous claim, but there ya go.

Look at the chemical structure of the various sweetener molecules. They're pretty varied:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sucralose
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspertame
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saccharin
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neotame
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acesulfame_potassium
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclamate
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steviol_glycoside

To assume that they're all similarly dangerous just because they all stimulate taste receptors similarly is specious reasoning. Almonds and hydrogen cyanide smell similar.

Also, table sugar (sucrose) is 50/50 fructose/glucose. High-fructose corn syrup is 55/45 fructose/glucose. So you're not getting a very big benefit from that, if you think fructose is so bad. (Although nobody keeps a can of HFCS in their pantry, anybody sweetening their own food is using table sugar anyway.)

I also noticed in reading about these that a number of them were discovered accidentally when someone working in a chemical company licked their fingers. Some of them were lab scientists! WTF was wrong with these people?

A previous lab accident gave them chemically enhanced balls.

To me, it's the only one that has no aftertaste. I hate Splenda, Equal, all the others. Truvia is the only one I ever use. Well, I try and only use real sugar, but if I have to use something artificial, I use something with stevia.

With Splenda, the researcher mis-heard his boss telling him to "test" the substance as "taste" the substance. So he shrugged and tasted it.

In Geology school we learned to taste and smell rocks for identification purposes. In Environmental Protection school I unlearned that right away. Still, we trust our senses, it's hard to shut them down.

Now I have a sudden craving for Cheetos and Dave Chappelle movies.

I'm still at a loss as to how the thread title relates to Coke, or anything drink related.
