Yeah, it was a draw to start but Obama fumbled from the healthcare part onward.

Romney: "I'm all for green energy!"

As someone from MA who remembers how he fought Cape Wind tooth and nail, I call BS on this one.

He's all for green energy. He's just not asking the taxpayers to foot the 90 billion dollar tab.

Yeah... no. He didn't want it as governor when it would bring jobs and income to MA. Why would he want it at all while at a federal level?

I want to say it's a loss for both sides but Romney's hollow "plans" probably convinced some people while Obama was mostly fumbling.

Final thought, off to bed soon: Romney won the first debate. He spoke much more concisely, stuck with buzzwords, and offered zero details... which is exactly what he needed to do to go toe-to-toe with Obama. Obama tripped himself up by trying to present details and refusing to go for "zingers," emotional appeal, or any of Romney's missteps.

This will probably close the gap in the polls back into the margin of error, IMO. Obama needs to channel a bit more 2008 in the next debates if he wants to shut Romney down... because as Varus 2.0 is pointing out, Romney is acting like Obama in 2008 and out-Obamaing Obama.

I think Obama could have won the debate by a landslide if he'd just asked details of Romney's plans. He made one good remark about vague plans and more would've made it much harder for Romney to repeat his plans mantra.

1-0 Romney as far as appearance is concerned.
1-0 Obama as far as talking about his plan and his record based on the facts.

Id say depending on how you vote it was a draw over all.

Even better, most of it is now meaningless without the context of the debate happening!

I'm sensing some gamesmanship here. If Obama embarrasses Mitt about the lack of details now, the better prepared Romney will be for it later. Might be prudent to wait until later to really hammer him for it, with the hope that he won't be able to handle it at a more critical juncture.

Same for breaking out the 47% bit. Might want to hang onto that card.

The third debate is "social policy" so you could argue that he'd save it for then but he would have been better off using it now while it's fresh. Especially since Romney kept talking about how he wants to help middle class America, etc. It was a missed opportunity.

I like how people on Facebook think their candidate won, simply because that's who they are voting for. Are people that blind to not understand how a debate works and not every good leader is a good debater?

The takeaway on the wider Internet has been that Romney wants to fire Big Bird.

My news Feed was flooded with BB pictures. Were these pictures already out on the web or were they instantly created? The debate wasn't even over yet, it's like people knew.

The GOP's desire to get rid of PBS is nothing new so I'm guessing the former.

I could only stand about 25 minutes of the debate before I got terminally bored. One thing that pissed me off was Romney kept saying "I promise no tax cuts that will raise the deficit." And never explained what the fuck kind of tax cut he was going to implement that wouldn't raise the deficit. And furthermore, if his tax cuts are going to be so subtle that they won't increase the deficit, then he's hardly delivering on the low-tax utopia he's promised to his base.

I listened to it on NPR while I was at work. (Hawaii time is so far behind you guys.)

I don't get how anyone "wins" these things, honestly.
