So, I found this mushroom Monday night. It probably weights like 6 pounds.

It's a Maitake, or in these parts it's known as Hen of the Woods.

I had an offer of fifty dollars for it but I'd already promised chunks to mushrooming friends and co-workers - and I want some for myself. It's supposed to be a very tasty shroom.

It's pretty exciting. It's my first major mushroom find. It's like finding buried treasure.

Some kind of seafood I think - maybe scallops. I was told not to use strong flavored ingredients.

Yeah don't use something that'll overpower the mushroomy goodness. Quite the find, extremely jealous!

It looks like something out of a bad horror movie. Sorry, I loathe mushrooms. The texture, the thought of what they are, where they grow... blech.

I have the same issue with rice. Rice is gross.

Same. Don't like the taste, either.

By itself, maybe. Mixed with other stuff on the other hand it's quite good. Or made with chicken/beef/vegetable broth instead of just water.

Seems appropriate since it looks like someone glued a bunch of clams together for Arts & Crafts.

I should have specified boiled rice. I quite like stir fried rice, for example. I think it's the consistency of boiled rice more than the (lack of) flavour.

That looks amazing. We had a really good morel season this year but at the farmer's market they were selling for like $45/lb. Uh, no thanks. I know your tweaker *** just dug those out of the woods off the side of the highway.

It's been a bumper year for mushrooms around here. I saw my very first fairy ring on the local elementary school's lawn.

I'm generally not a huge fan of mushrooms, although my rule as someone who loves cooking is I have to be able to use and enjoy any ingredient. I enjoy the flavour, but don't usually enjoy the texture. Morel's are amazing and delicious though.

I just don't like mushrooms. I can't get over the idea of eating fungus. I know it a completely mental thing, and that I'm probably missing out of some tasty treats, but I'm fine with that. As an aside, unless you really know what you're doing, your shouldn't be eating wild mushrooms. The really tasty ones and the really deadly ones can look very similar.

Bread and alcohol contain fungus.

I had some. It was good.

Think I might try and batter and deep fry some - they can handle it.

You would eat a mushroom that's grown in a barrel? Freak.

Yeah, there are no poisonous shrooms that would get confused with the Maitake. But, still wild mushrooms have all sorts of odd stuffs in them, and even non-poisonous ones can cause negative reactions in some people. You just need to try them out slow.

Also, I had just gone to a mushroom class a couple weeks ago. This was one of the 'sample' mushrooms the teach had just found and brought in to show us. Further, one of my coworkers is good friends with the head chef at a local dinner restaurant. The chef ID'd it. He also offered to buy it from me.
