That was simultaneous?
Yes.:2 (13.3%)
No, not even close.:6 (40.0%)
No, but I could see it going either way.:1 (6.7%)
No, but for $75/hr I can fake it.:6 (40.0%)
Total:15

I just don't see it, sorry. As a Seattle fan I want to, I really want to, but I can't. You see the replay, and it was obvious (to me at least) Tate got his hands in there late, and simply just hung on hoping for the best. In the spur of the action though, I can only imagine (pray?) it looked closer than it did on replay. The TV announcers used the word 'simultaneous', for whatever that's worth, and apparently the play isn't reviewable or something?

To bring people who don't know up to speed, the NFL's real referees aren't working these days. They're on strike while they negotiate a new contract with the league. The game is being officiated by replacements, from backwater college leagues and the likes. Common train of thought is that the replacements are in way over their heads, are making poor and questionable calls; this latest one being the worst of the bunch. The hope among fans now is that this forces the league to meet be more flexible with compensation to get the real officials back on the field, as they've been pretty stingy with their terms.

Does this really force the league to negotiate? I'm not optimistic. Millions of dollars are at stake, and football fans are pretty darn loyal. We'll put up with a lot. After all the real refs back terrible calls too. Say hello to Super Bowl XL, and having 14 points taken away from you. This is nothing in comparison. Of course, I'm not bitter or anything... Smiley: rolleyes

If it does spur change though, I suppose we can feel lucky this happened in week 3 and not in the playoffs sometime. Which leads to the real question:

Q: What's the different between real refs and replacement refs?

A: Replacement refs make bad calls in our favor.

Smiley: clown

It was reviewed, as I understand it, but they still kept the call on the field. Based on the rule (if one player established possession before the other player does, then it's not simultaneous possession, even if they both have it at the end), then that was an interception. Has to be.

That being said, I'm not upset with the replacement refs. Helps, of course, that it hasn't yet cost the Texans a win, of course.

But it's funny and sad how all the commentators and ex-players have their panties in a twist over this. They're so fire-and-brimstone about the whole ref thing. Me, I'm just enjoying the crazy stories and drama that are coming from it; the NFL hasn't been this entertaining in years. Week 3 was nuts.

Sounds like it'll work out best for the official refs that are on the sidelines. "See what happens when we're not around?"

Yeah, I just read this since posting...

Simultaneous possession between the goal lies cannot be reviewed. Simultaneous possession in the end zone can be reviewed.

The drama is certainly entertaining though. Smiley: grin

I mean, we've had obvious missed calls for us and some questionable ones, mostly penalty related. We were granted an extra timeout by an official in Phoenix the first week of the season as well. I was kind of glad we ended up losing that one, because at the time I was thinking no one really wants to win because of a bad call like that.

I suppose that pales in comparison now. Smiley: rolleyes

I don't have an issue with the replacement refs. Bad calls happen all the time and they happen to both sides. There is a concern that the current replacements are often making calls in favour of the home team to placate the crowds, bute ven that's not a huge issue to me as each team gets 8 road games and 8 homes games.

One of the things I've heard recently, that if true, should cause the NFL to cave is that the games are running longer and therefore, running into other scheduled programming and the TV networks are getting upset.

The NFL refs can't hold a candle to blown calls in the MLB. Then again, the MLB refs get 162x9x??? chances a year to blow a call, so the probability is significantly greater. Personally, after seeing the play, I don't think the GB dude had definitive control beyond what the Seattle guy had, and both had both hands firmly wrapped around the ball when they hit the ground. IMO, it's a toss up. I think the only reason people are so ridiculously upset is because it was in fact the last play of the game and one that absolutely affected the outcome. Under less conspicuous circumstances, it would be just another ho-hum moment.

It's pretty bad when you find out some of the replacement refs were fired from the lingerie football league for incompetence.

Last night's call wasn't a bad one, it was the WRONG one, & it was upheld. Ridiculous.

Should have been a flag on the play for OPI anyway. I know you let some stuff go in a Hail Mary play, but that was just blatant.

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed the missed OPI call. Had they gotten Tate for that, the "simultaneous" catch wouldn't be an issue. As a Packers fan, I'm still a little pissed, but you know what? It's just a game, and I'll get over it eventually.

Somebody made a joke that the head ref let the call stand because Golden Tate is on his fantasy team. Couldn't help but laugh at that one. Smiley: lol

Certainly was. But it's not like the regular officials don't blow that play, too. I remember one just as blatant happening in the 2007 Ravens Patriots playoff game, and it allowed Baltimore to make the catch (the guy got tackled at the 1 though, so the Pats still won, and nobody rioted).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAbyVbjvydU

That's the best video I could find, unfortunately, but you'll notice a Patriot go flying out of the pile of guys waiting to bat the ball. One of the Ravens WRs just grabbed him and threw him out of the way.

While the general rule of thumb is to not call penalties on the last play of the game, these refs blew the final call. One motioned for a touchback and one for a TD. The sad thing is, the pack should have won that game on Interception + Touchback.

But this is just the tip of the ice berg, earlier in the game there was a first and 30 DPI called against GB when it was clearly the SEA player who had committed OPI. Then there was a string of 5 plays all which had a penalty. Then there was the blatant holds/illegal contact/PI's that weren't called.

Props to the Coaches and Players this year, they have been pretty calm in games, which is surprising considering the rules seem to change every down.

Their official word now that they've reviewed it today, for what it's worth...

Quote:
The NFL said Seattle's last-second touchdown pass Monday should not have been overturned - but acknowledged Seahawks receiver Golden Tate should have been called for offensive pass interference before the catch for a 14-12 victory.

and of course...

Quote:
Saying there was no indisputable evidence, though, is not the same as confirming the initial call was correct.

I'd be curious if the replacement refs are actually making more bad calls than the regular refs, or if we just think so because every single time a bad call is made there's a reference to the fact that they are replacements. It's not like folks aren't normally up in arms about various bad calls, they're just adding the whole "replacement" bit into the mix.

While I would agree that is potentially part of it, there have been some seriously messed up things that have happened. Last night just happened to be the most glaring.

Well, what if you catch the guy who caught the ball, then manage to carry both guy and ball all the way to the end zone? I think that should count as a score.

And, unless the officials can retroactively overturn Darrelle Revis's torn ACL I don't really care at this point.

I'm just mystified by the out of place use of the phrase "on both sides of the aisle". We're not talking about conflict in the middle east here. He doesn't need to trot out the stock "I'm a centrist and taking no sides" language.
