Nothing says patriotism like destroying small parts of your nation.

Good idea. Let's get Godzilla, the Anti-Japan city destroyer. Smiley: dubious

I guess they were getting bored with the Kuril islands and decided they wanted to try annoying China for a while instead.

Considering that Joph mentioned Japanese drone strike against China, and then you mentioned getting Godzilla I figure I was keeping up with the conversation pretty well.

I've only half paid attention to this but my understanding is that some Japanese dude has private ownership of these islands which are within the sphere or Chinese control. The Japanese government plans to buy them and annex them into Japan.

Obviously I know jack about Chinese property laws but wouldn't this be the same as me selling my yard to Canada and the Canadian government saying they're going to annex it as part of the nation of Canada? I'm pretty sure that's not kosher.

Naturally, it's a bunch of shitty rocks no one actually has a use for besides farming fields of nationalism and jingoism on its stony shores. The Falklands of the Pacific!

Then I don't see what the issue is. Then again, I'm not an angry Chinese person either.

Huh. The article I had read implied that they didn't have much of anything to offer but I'll happily admit that no one should listen to me on this topic.

Well, since the US won, they were in charge of sorting out pacific territory. Having minimal vested interest in it they sorta pulled a "you take this, you take that" giving china most of its conquered area back, and giving Japan a bunch of ****** non populated islands. Do note that this isn't the worst territorial divvy up post ww2 in terms of later aggravation.

Now China wants to be recognized as a major power, and the easiest way to do so is to start **** just because you can. And the easiest way to do that without actually fighting is to have random citizens do it for you, rather than the high command.

From the wikigospel

Quote:
The two governments of China first made their claims during the mid-1970s after a 1968 study by experts discovered that oil reserves might be found under the sea near the Senkaku Islands

It's one of those "extending your economic exclusion zone" things was my understanding; I want to say Taiwan claims them too.

Also,

Quote:
The island group consists of five uninhabited islets and three barren rocks.

Oh yeah, and at some nebulous point in the past china had claimed the islands, but so did Japan. Since noone had developed the hallowed traditions of "FIRST" or "Shotgun", and the island was so ******, noone put anything on it for hundreds of years, it's become the target for a rousing game of LASTt
